the song is pretty self explanatory. its just saying hey instead of trying to please everybody else, be yourself. do what makes you happy because when all the people you know now are gone out of your life you will have nothing.
I would agree that it is saying to be yourself, but not that you shouldn't please everybody else. It's kinda like the song posters by jack johnson. It's saying not to follow the trends and to be the kind of person everyone else wants you to be
