Octopus's Garden Lyrics
I’d like to be under the sea in an octopus’s garden in the shade,
He’d let us in, knows where we’ve been, in his octopus’s garden in the shade.
I’d ask my friends to come and see an octopus’s garden with me.
I’d like to be under the sea in an octopus’s garden in the shade.
We would be warm below the storm in our little hide-a-way beneath the waves.
Resting our head on the sea bed in an octopus’s garden near a cave.
We would sing and dance around because we know we can’t be found.
I’d like to be under the sea in an octopus’s garden in the shade.
We would shout and swim about the coral that lies beneath the waves.
Oh what joy for every girl and boy knowing they’re happy and they’re safe.
We would be so happy, you and me, no-one there to tell us what to do,
I’d like to be under the sea in an octopus’s garden with you.

Ringo wrote this song in Sardinia. Peter Seller lent them his yacht and they went out for the day. They told the captain they wanted fish and chips for lunch. And so when lunch time came around they ate the french fries, but then there was this other stuff on the plate-it was squid. they ate it and thought it was okay but a little rubbery. ringo and the captain were out on deck talking about octopuses. He told ringo that they hang out in their caves and go around the seabed finding shiny stones and in cans and bottles to put in front of their cave like a garden. Ringo thought this was fabulous...
@buterfly7 exactly the story Ringo just told in an interview I watched just watched on MSNBC

Written after Ringo went on a vacation sea cruise after the exhausting Get Back sessions. Saw a reef, thought it would be comforting to live there and not have to deal with any of the problems involved with being...well, a Beatle...

Just simple escape. Best song Ringo did...which isn't saying much :)
yep, Sardinia as mentioned below

Ringo's saying that the band would've been happier if it didn't need to worry about the world, they could just be a band. "sing and dance around...can't be found"
Ringo wrote this song after he stormed out of the White Album sessions.
He went on vacation in Sardinia, and while sitting around on the beach he met a fisherman who told him about the octupus' at the bottom of the sea.
He explained how they go around the bottom collecting stones and shiny objects to build a garden with. This sounded interesting to Ringo as, at the time he too wanted to be under the sea, away from it all.
Geroge would later re-write most of the song in the studio before recording began, but full credit was still given to Ringo.
I love the bubbling sound around 1:30 with the guitar solo, it sounds like a bong
There is no undertone. This song is just pure, lighthearted Ringo. He was very fond of doing cute, happy songs like this.
Ringo has discussed the fomration of the song. Like mentioned, he got angry during the album recordings and stormed out, taking a trip near the ocean. He mellowed out, and came back with an idea for a song.
Oh, and Re: Guy making drug connection to snow white. The Disney version you reference came out in 1937. Up until much later, cocaine was by and large created as a translucent liquid, and not the white powder seen today. If you'd like more proof, the origins of the story go back about 120 years before that version ever saw the light of day either. Sorry to ruin such a good story.

also, where do you guys get there rediculous ideas of what the song is about? fucking hilarious
Simple song about what octopi do. Ringo when on a vacation, the head chef offered him the octopus. When he turned it down thechef began to tell Ringo everything he knew about octopi and what they do unter the sea, gathering rocks shells and shiny objects, essentially creating a garden. No sexual undertone, just a childrens tune. Ringo wanted to be a childrens book writer or do something in that field, shown when he did vocals for Yellow submarine and i believe he also did rocky racoon. He went on to be the voice of Thomas the Train engine or w/e the childrens show was called. Very simple, any sexual undertones you get from the song is just from you looking to hard for a meaning.
