Would You Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone) Lyrics

would you lay with me in a field of stone
if my needs were strong, would you lay with me

should my lips grow dry,
would you wet them, dear
in the midnight hour,
if my lips were dry

would you go away to another land
walk a thousand miles through the burning sand
wipe the blood away from my dying hand
if I give myself to you

would you lay with me
in the stream of life
when the moon is full,
would you bathe with me

will you still love me,
when I'm down and out
in my time of trial,
would you stand by me

would you go away to another land
walk a thousand miles through the burning sand
wipe the blood away from my dying hand
if I give myself to you

would you lay with me
in a field of stone
if my needs were strong,
would you lay with me

Could be just a love song but I think it's America's version of "Danny Boy," which was a song about a son going to war and the father who wished he could take his place. Would You Lay With Me sounds like a man/woman willing to sacrifice their life for country..."go a thousand miles...then when it talks about wipe the blood away (war) and finally "lay with me in a field of stone" (cemetery) "if my love" (for my country) "were strong, would you lay with me?" (Comrades) JMHO :)

It's a love song asking if the person is in for the long haul no matter what happens.

This is a song about the relationship between man/woman (you and I) and Jesus Do you believe? It covers his Love ( the only true form of Love) Babtism, his death, wetting his lips on the cross, living their homes, would you die for him... all that he has given for you would you do the same in return.......This song is only for those who believe in Jesus, Aso he did not form the Christian religion.. that is not what he was brought here for. Thus in you consideration of this keep him separated from any form of religious affiliation..

My Interpretation

My thoughts were similar, very similar. well done.

David Allen Coe has written a song that can and will be interpreted in different ways. The veiled Jesus really can't be overlooked but has no more relevance than other interpretations. Tantalizing lyrics.

I feel like the song is about love between a woman and a man. They are asking all the hard questions of each other rather than asking all the easy questions about love. Most agree to be together through the good times but take off through the hard times. They stop loving one another when times get hard. She/he wants to make sure the other will still be around through the hard time, hence lay with me in a field of stone instead of a bed of roses. If my lips were dry in the midnight hour would you wet them, I take to mean if he/she was sick and unable would the other be there to help and comfort the other. Would you still love me when I'm down and out means if he/she was depressed or sad instead of happy all the time would the other stick around. Also I feel that they're asking would you lay with me in a field of stone (hard times) or just lay with me when the bed of life is soft? If my needs were great: would u not run away. Would you go away to another land, walk a thousand miles through the burning sand I feel he/she's asking if that's how far the other would have to go to get to the other are they willing to go that far? Wipe the blood away from my dying hand I take to mean if she/he was injured and that was all the other could do to comfort them would they at least do that? Just my thoughts.
