None But The Brave

This is probably the most underrated GWAR song there is. The fact that nobody else has commented on it (till now) is a testament to that fact. It's also probably my favorite song by them.

What I take away from this song?

"Welcome back, is it the same? Smelly but now old and lame Did you ever think to miss me? Here's my ass, come on and kiss me"

When I hear those lines I always think about someone I haven't seen for a while and how to my person things really haven't changed much but when you see someone after a while they usually expect you to go on about all the things in your life. But the devil is in the details, the line "Did you ever think to miss me? Here's my ass come on and kiss me!" to me is referring to some one who asks you how you're doing but doesn't necessarily care, they're just asking to be cordial or polite.

"We come on out here, none but the brave And then I say to myself why do I stay and stay Is there a reason? Hypocrisy? But in the end I only got just what you gave to me Whud you get? Share it with me Whud you get? Did you get it for free?"

The opening line is semi haunting in that "We come on out here, none but the brave, and I say to myself why do I stay and stay?" suggesting there are these situations or circumstances that requires one to put on a brave front but at the same time the lyrics ask do I really need this? Is it necessary for me to have to put up with this? which the next line

"Is there a reason? Hypocrisy?" Suggesting that maybe the only reason you're there putting on the brave front is because you don't want to be a hypocrite.

"But in the end I only got just what you gave to me Whud you get? Share it with me Whud you get? Did you get it for free? Then it ain't worth nothing baby"

This part kinda seems self explanatory to me, though I might be hammering the wrong nail on this one. At the end of the day all I have is what I've been given, but if it was free and not earned it wasn't really worth it. The old teach a man to fish parable.

"We got a deli, we got a bus We got a lot of people throwing rocks at us We got a tour lined up, we got a show I got a midget following me around everywhere I go now He says his name is Joe now, I really just don't know now"

And this is really the meat of it, they kinda reveal the song is about being on tour and what its like being in the band and the troubles that sometimes come along the way and the stresses. "People throwing rocks at us" is clearly the criticism they're enduring, the midget named Joe possibly the annoying fans that come with the territory. "I really just don't know now" almost a sigh at the end of the verse, in the midst of all these annoying things just not sure what to do or think but continue on.

"None but the brave, why do you stay and stay? Sad enough to make me cry, strong enough to make me die Now I'm feeling saddle sore Now I'm feeling warm Keep you here safe from harm, tuck you down inside my arm And when you're lonely and afraid, remember the love we made"

reiterating only the brave would continue staying though getting to a point where it almost doesn't matter any more.

And then comes the silver lining of the song, as if the person is remembering the sweet part of life even though being habitually worn down from it. This shines through especially in

"And when you're lonely and afraid, remember the love we made"
