Blown Wide Open Lyrics

So I'm surrounded..
By the things I thought I'd put away
And I'm surrounded..
By the things I thought I'd put away
-
And there's a pile in the closet
That's where I threw some yesterday
Maybe under the rug
That's where I swept some the other day
-
So the mess is drawing forces
Outside I hear them say
Just come out with your hands up
So we can blow you away
-
(chorus)
And I walk out the door..
Get blown wide open
By the things I'd put away
And I wasn't even warned..
Just blown wide open
Now the mess is where I lay
-
So I'm surrounded..
By the things I thought I'd put away
So I'm surrounded..
By the things I thought I'd put away
-
And if I'm a slob
Well I never looked at it that way
Irresponsible
Well you're not the first to say
-
But I told her I'm sorry
I never wanted it this way
Yeah I still need her
But the mess wont go away
-
(chorus)
And I walk out the door..
Get blown wide open
By the things I'd put away
And I'm out on the porch..
Just blown wide open
By the mess is where I lay
-
Yeah Blown Wide Open
Blown Wide Open
Blown Wide Open
Blown Wide Open
The gun's still smokin'..
Blood keeps flowin'..
Blown Wide Open
Blown Wide Open
-
Would she go there?
-
Ohh I'm surrounded..

The second last lyric is supposed to be "Why's she going?"

It's about the skeletons in his closet that are coming back to haunt him. The girl left (Why's she going) and he's horribly depressed about it. Christ the entire albulm is about his depression based on the one that got away!

The whole album is about a break up with a girl. Listen to "Under the Lighthouse"

So I think the meaning of the some is stuff that happens AFTER the breakup. The album and the song is about regrets about ending the relationship and longing for the woman he swept away. The feelings that he keeps thinking he set aside and put away keep coming back to the surface and destroying him till he can sweep them away again.

I love the imagery in this tune. I always picture his house surrounded, as you would expect cops to surround a house with a dangerous person inside. But, that's not what I feel the song is about. It's more like all the things he's been hiding from someone or everyone suddenly hit him as being wrong and he's desperately hopeless to correct them. He steps out on the porch and basically just breaks down and starts crying. That's how I imagine it.

THats interesting, i love reading other people's interpretations, i always thought of it as a depression like he thought he got over it and he just gets blown away when it comes back thinking it was over with, but i think you guys are right...... Big Wreck is awesome, this song is great for relaxing

Awesome song! I think it seems as though he's trying to be someone he's not but he slips up and gets "blown wide open".

My take on it is that he has done some things in his past that he tried to put behind him (sweep them away), but they came back to haunt him. His girlfriend/wife leaves him and he gets "blown wide open" (literally, or not).

I really like this song, although it's sad.

That last comment is right. It's about how he cheated on her, or did something like that, early on in the relationship, when he thought it wouldn't matter if it ended. But as the relationship progressed, and they fell deeply in love, he became afraid that his former Sins would be discovered. Eventually they were, and when he walked in, she hit him with what he had done, Hence the Metaphorical feeling of being "Blown Wide Open" Which also explains why he cries out "Why's She Going?" at the end of the song, like he's saying "Goddamnit, I did it before, when I didn't think it'd matter, I realize I've done wrong and I think we can work through it."

Or, instead of looking at it like every song is about a breakup, to me it almost sounds like he got shot by said girl maybe, maybe someone else. Cus at the end he says “guns still smoking, blood keeps flowing, blown wide open” I took that into big consideration by seeing if Thornley has an even deeper part of himself.

My Interpretation

@zeemulla could be a metaphor too (i.e. the whole story of the song). To me it is suggesting that they are trying to convince themselves they put the relationship behind them, but when then it hits them ... they still miss them / want them, that is when it feels like they've been shot and still bleeding (their heart).
