Shade And The Black Hat Lyrics
Shade and the black hat don't tell me
i've paid my regards pouring in wine
what i've seen it tears me inside
can they hear me when i speak
my knees bowed
who fell here time away
shame married to go towards
don't tell me i've paid my regards
pouring in wine what i've seen
it tears me apart can they hear me
when i speak my tongue's tied.
i've paid my regards pouring in wine

Wow, that's mostly all I can say. The music is just amazing, and the power that later comes in Jeremy's voice just gives me chills. Of all his songs, this is by far my favorite. Anyone who is a fan of powerful (not hardcore, powerful) music, NEEDS TO HEAR THIS.
This song gives me the most beautiful empty feeling I've ever felt every time I hear it.

I think this song is about him being unable to properly say what he's dying to say - "Can they hear me when I speak, my tongue's tied" and he can stand the fact that he may not be a be able to say what he's dying to say "it tears me apart" and "Can they hear me when i speak" I also think he's talking about Christ cause he mentions paying his regards (which i take to mean Christ's death) and maybe the black hat represents the funeral that never really was. I'm not sure what the wine would mean though. The only mention of wine related to Christ that I can think of is at the last supper and at the temple when he was a child.
I also think some of the lyrics are missing though, at the end
i know this post is pretty old, but if you take "paying regards" as a reference to Christ's death, I'd think it would follow "i've paid my regards pouring in wine" would mean something like "i've sacrificed in blood, as Christ did", even further, sacrificing in blood most likely a metaphor and and a hyperbole just saying "don't tell me i haven't lived to follow Christ's example, i've sacrificed and been altruistic as he did, and at great personal expense to myself." just a thought.
