Do You Want To Play? Lyrics

Met her on a Friday afternoon
In a neon dayglo pink chiffon satin room
She never looks back
She always looked good dressed in black
CHORUS
Oh...You're so special
Oh...Who gives a...
Do you want to play?

She lived beneath the disco discount store
With pictures of Randy Newman scattered all across the floor
I said, "This is place looks sort of desolate"
She said, "Are you only half alive or have you always been this inarticulate?"

CHORUS

Don't think too hard
Don't think too fast
Don't ever give away what you can't take back
Don't try and understand what you can't comprehend
Underneath the disco neon daylight chandelier disco deity of the chivalry
I said, "Take it back
Take it back
Take it back"

CHORUS

I think this is a really fun song with a great tune but I'm struggling with the lyrics.

"With pictures of Randy Newman scattered all across the floor"

Who was Randy Newman and what does this mean?

And here is a line that crops up in many Jewel songs: "She said, "Are you only half alive or have you always been this inarticulate?""

"Inarticulate" is a standard insult that Jewel uses often in her writing.

My Interpretation

Randy Newman is a singer/songwriter and composer. He's famous for doing film scores; he wrote the score for the Toy Story movies as well as Cars, Pleasantville and the latest movie The Princess and The Frog.

I also have some trouble understanding the lyrics. I think it's about the narrator (Jewel) meeting a struggling artist or something like that.

I remember reading somewhere that she said this was a song written about a girl she met. And then that's all I know. I still don't know what it means. Someone explain! or try!

I love this song. It's so fun and mysterious;I have no idea what it means.

On the little paper insert that comes with the CD and has the lyrcis on it she mentions that this song has a hidden meaning... I think it's about a lesbian experience to be honest.
