Paul McCartney wrote this song for Martha, his sheepdog.
I think it's about Jane Asher. They kept a relationship for about 5 years, and she was an inspiration for him indeed, since he wrote many songs for her. Jane broke up with him because of his infidelity. So, I think Paul wrote this song and he meant: "Look what you've done (about breaking up), when you find yourself in the thick of it help yourself to a bit of what is all around you, silly girl (when you are involved in a situation, all you have to do is benefit from what you can benefit and forget about the bad aspects of it, you've been dating a beatle, look at how much you could enjoy and benefit from that, but you care about fidelity, that' so silly!), "take a good look around you" (see what you've missed). At the end he does a "mea culpa", he feels kind of guilty and recognizes her value: "you have always been my inspiration" and asks "be good to me" and "don't forget me". When the white album was released, he had been already dating Linda, so that he used his doggie's name to disguise it. I think that is what this song is all about.

i love the intro to this song- it's so pretty and upbeat
paul wrote this song for his former love interest jane asher. but during the time he was dating linda eastman. the inspiration for the song came from paul believing that he and jane were meant to be together.

It was written about Jane Asher. Asher was McCartney's muse in the sense that he wrote many, many songs about her: "For No One," "Things We Said Today," etc. Basically most of his songs from 1965 and 1966 were about Asher. Agree too that McCartney was not over their relationship at this point: "don't forget me," etc.
I agree with anadina on this one, for all the reasons that anadina listed in her interpretation of "Martha My Dear." Paul's sheepdog's name was indeed Martha, but I don't believe he wrote such a sweet, melancholy sounding melody about a dog! No. I believe this song was about Jane Asher too. Paul had written many songs about Jane when they were a couple. "Here, There and Everywhere" was one of them. Jane had broken up with Paul when she found him with another woman.

Egghead's right, it's not about his sheepdog. It's about Paul's "Muse," who I guess he named Martha. He named his sheepdog after his muse, and this song is about the real Martha.
