I think this song is telling the tragic life of Maeglin.

Aredhel gave her son a Quenyan name in secret, so I imagine she would have shared with him stories of the Noldor, and what was beyond his father's dark home. Obviously Maeglin could not express this to Eol, since he was Telerin, but it's a good bet he still would have longed for something other than the darkness he was born into.

'...Will I betray myself To rise?'

Maeglin betrayed the location of Gondolin to the Morgoth, thus causing the city's downfall. Morgoth had his ways with telling lies to get what he wanted, and promised Maeglin Gondolin and Idril.

'I'm lost in the depth of his eyes I can't flee Inner pain caused insanity It's deep within The fear and the hunger Enslaved and denied By my love and my enemies I'm the illgotten son'

Perhaps about making his decision to betray Gondolin. He thinks that by revealing its location, he can escape the pain and madness. Nonetheless, he also fears what would happen if he denied Morgoth's demands. Yet in the end, with the promise of someone who would never love him in return, and being able to get revenge on his enemies, he tells Morgoth. Really all he wants is to be loved; he was, after all, the illgotten son.

Whoa. I'm too analytical. Sorry if that made no sense.

Harvest Of Sorrow was written for this album and it's about Túrin's tragic life! I'm not sure why they didn't use it, but I think it's because the album sums up the Silmarillion just half-way through. To before the events around Túrin. They couldn't just put in a random place between the other songs, it would mess up the story. It's certainly not suitable to end an album like NIME with it too, because, as beautiful as it may be, it's not a closer.

This song is not about Túrin! Okay?

Eöl is more likely, but I still believe that it is about Maeglin. Though there are some lines which could refer to Eöl, I think this is important to consider:

This I think tells about when Maeglin ran away from the forest and his father.

Actually, this is not about Túrin, nor Maeglin. In my opinion its about Eöl the dark elf. Eöl was executed by throwing him off the cliff and on the bottom there were thorns.

"Will I betray myself To rise"

This is when he was given a choise of staying and living in Gondolin or dying. He chose to die and take his son Maeglin with him, but Maeglin didn't die.

Thats just my opinion, Maeglin sounds like a good choise too though.

The entire album (Nightfall in Middle-Earth) is about the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, a book of legends set long before the events of The Lord of the Rings. This particular song seems to be about Turin Turambar, son of a great mortal hero, who was driven to madness and death by his destiny. Turin was haunted by cruel fate. While he was a great hero in his way, he also brought grief and death with him wherever he went...for example, when an elven friend of his -Beleg the Strongbow- found him having a nightmare and tried to wake him, he believed his friend to be an enemy, attacked and killed him, with Beleg's own sword. His mother and sister, who he had been searching for throughout his entire life, were driven to madness and suicide by his actions even though they never actually met. He was responsible for the fall of an entire elven kingdom, and so on. In the end, Turin defeated Glaurung, the oldest and greatest of Morgoth's dragons. After this, his insanity passed, and he saw for the first time all the things he had done. In pain, he threw himself onto his sword, the same sword he had taken from the corpse of his best friend Beleg and so ended his life.

So...great song about a great tragic hero.

I think it is more likely about Túrin.

Is a dead giveaway regarding Glaurung.

It is about Maeglin, and the fall og Gondolin. BG actually have another song about Turin, Harvest Of Sorrow. And the short songs and speeches between the real songs on NIME is connected with the song before or after. "The Dark Elf" begins this whole story, and the Dark Elf was Maeglin's father. Great song!

It's absolutely not about Eöl, and I don't think it's about Maeglin. I think it's about Turin, 'I'm lost in the depth of his eyes I can't flee" He must be talking about Glaurung, if the song had been about Maeglin there would be no such line in the lyrics, cause Maeglin fell in love with a girl (was it her cousin? I don't remember her name) so it would rather stay "her eyes" in that case.

Yhis one's about Maeglin. BG makes it hard for us by seeing everything from the bad guy's perspective but the "Illgotten son" line should be a dead giveaway
