Nebraska Lyrics

hey mike i wish i could
help you figure something out
but it's been too long since we spoke
your sarcasm radiates unhappiness
so withdrawn and rooted deep inside

are you content at twenty seven
were you hopeful at seventeen
a void the size of oceans
stretches out between us
i guess our blood
is supposed to be a bridge
can you pull yourself up
from this self hatred
can you pull yourself up
frustrations driven you to angry dreams

let nebraska disappear
in golden flames of grain
i know you can't imagine
having company right now
there's a world of tired faces
who understand this pain
there's a better life
waiting on the outside
of these decaying walls

your bitterness doesn't surprise me
as these pointless days
go screaming by
rejected sour eyes
can't imagine blue skies
rejected sour eyes
can't imagine blue skies

i wish you could find something to live for
besides the agony
of bleeding towards the last breath
i truly believe that you want more than this
this is killing you
that what you want is very simple
somehow so complex to get
please don't hate yourself

these are some of my favorite lyrics of all time. it's just talking about the way that this guy chris knows is really angry with the world and the way his life is shaping up. it seems like many/most lawrence arms songs deal with growing up and the way people and relationships change over time. it's a great metaphor to show how their friendship is becoming more and more distant: "a void the size of oceans stretches out between us." i also get the feeling it's his brother, since their blood is supposed to be the bridge across that ocean. i also really love the line "there's a world of tired faces who understand this pain," because it seems to address the punk community (that's stupid, i guess), or anyone at all who feels that society has shafted them. i'm sure a good deal of lawrence arms fans have felt this way at one point or another. i love when brendan does his little scratchy backups toward the end. they rock so hard. please don't hate yourself.

The first time I heard this I thought that maybe it was about Mike Park, but I don't know what Brendan's/Chris' relationship with Mike Park is like. It doesn't really make sense anyway because the Mike in the song seems really fustrated and angry, and that doesn't sound like Mike Park at all!

At the Omaha show last July, before playing our crowd favorite Nebraska, Brandon explained the song was about their friend Mike (Brown?) that works at the First National or Mutual of Omaha bank here. A lot of people asked if he was doing alright, and Brandon stated that he's become happier here.
