In his Biography, I Me Mine, George recollected that he used tabla and sitar on the basic track, overdubbing vocals and guitar at a later stage. However, it was discovered that the sitar didn't appear until the third take and the tabla until the sixth.
The song's working title was Granny Smith, but, as anyone will tell you, working titles, in these days, meant nothing.

This is such a pretty song. I really like the sitar... it's very mesmerizing. The lyrics are good but not special, but also perfect for this song. Very straitforward though.
This is one of my most favourite, favourite songs ever...but I could never decide which Beatles song I like the most. Hmmm. But I agree; very straight forward and simple, but that's half the reason I love it so much.
