Asleep In The Back Lyrics
Were you crushed
Did I rush you
All my time is yours
My twisted heart is yours
The faithless shit is yours
The shameless fits of love that only smother you for moments
Until I fold them up and leave
All yours
(chorus)
Oh you had to ask didn’t you (x2)
Oh you had to know
Show your scars
Not to rush you
The hieroglyphic hints in all the toilet scrawl
Guilty little pins
And all the things I never talk about
Are spilling with the gin
Test how tough you are
All yours
(chorus)
Not to rush you
Did I rush you
All my time is yours
My twisted heart is yours
The faithless shit is yours
The shameless fits of love that only smother you for moments
Until I fold them up and leave
All yours
Oh you had to ask didn’t you (x2)
Oh you had to know
Not to rush you
The hieroglyphic hints in all the toilet scrawl
Guilty little pins
And all the things I never talk about
Are spilling with the gin
Test how tough you are
All yours

hello, i've never dared look at how my lyrics are interpreted but i'm glad i did today. i'm very flattered that everyone who posted took the time to look for meaning in our songs. firstly there are no wrong answers. whatever they mean to you is what they are about but i thought it may be interesting for you to know that of the above posts, CRUMBs interpretation is the closest to my motivation for those words. i'll go through the other songs on this list and just put the name of the closest interpreter. once again thanks for listening so intently. guy x
I think it's about a relationship that went too fast and fell apart. Like, they found out about each other more than they wanted to know.
"The shameless fits of love that only smother you for moments Until I fold them up and leave All yours" Getting very close too fast and then ending it abruptly.
"show your scars, not to rush you" talking about the things that have hurt her in the past, asking too much too soon.
"And all the things I never talk about Are spilling with the gin Test how tough you are" getting drunk and talking about the past, things he wouldn't normally disclose, things that has hurt him, that might hurt her, and whether or not she can take to hear it.
That's my initial interpretation at least, might not be what was intended to be heard but that's how I saw it.
my interpretation of the song is the guy finally telling the girl how much she means to him. i can imagine him having the feelings built up for ages, then she asks him "what's up", and all this comes out. "all my time is yours, my twisted heart is yours..." he's infatuated by her. "shameless fits of love that only smother you for moments" is how in the past he would have accidentally let his guard down and momentarily made it obvious how he didnt just see her as a friend. the lines "were you crushed" "did i rush you" and "not to rush you" all show his nervousness in finally telling her the truth.
either way, whatever. fantastic song!
I definitely agree. this is the feeling i get when I listen to the song. Its love being declared cautiously. love it, love it!

I feel like this song is a perfect description of impermanence in a relationship, the fact that many of us make poor decisions while in a relationship with someone who we truly care about.
It sounds almost as though he confessed to an affair and feels bad about it, like he wants to re-establish his commitment. "All my time is yours My twisted heart is yours The faithless shit is yours The shameless fits of love that only smother you for moments Until I fold them up and leave All yours"
Such a nice, slow song. Great video also. I think it's about a relationship about to end, the guy is asking the girl what went wrong.
awesome song! and i agree, the video is really really great. very suitable for the song
absolutley a great song, love it! almost makes me cry everytime I hear it, It's about a guy thinking about his dying relationship and trying to figure out what he did to make it go bad, beautiful!

Where do you get that interpretation? The only evidence of it I see is in the first two lines and the "gin" segment, but nowhere else...
I always thought Elbow were shit but I love this song suddenly. It is quite gritty, lyrically, even though it sounds very gentle and unsevere.
