That's Not Me Lyrics
I had to prove that I could make it alone
But that's not me
I wanted to show how independent I'd grown now
But that's not me
I could try to be big in the eyes of the world
What matters to me is what I could be to just one girl
I'm a little bit scared
Cause I haven't been home in a long time
You needed my love
And I know that I left at the wrong time
My folks when I wrote them
Told 'em what I was up to said that's not me
I went through all kinds of changes
Took a look at myself and said that's not me
I miss my pad and the places I've known
And every night as I lay there alone I will dream
I once had a dream
So I packed up and split for the city
I soon found out that my lonely life wasn't so pretty
I'm glad I went now I'm that much more sure that we're ready
I once had a dream
So I packed up and split for the city
I soon found out that my lonely life wasn't so pretty
I once had a dream
So I packed up and split for the city
I soon found out that my lonely life wasn't so pretty
But that's not me
I wanted to show how independent I'd grown now
But that's not me
What matters to me is what I could be to just one girl
Cause I haven't been home in a long time

And I know that I left at the wrong time

If I had to choose a theme song for this chapter of my life it would be this song. With all the external pressures in life, whether it be parents, school, friends, success, work; when you re-evaluate your life you realize that you have been living for someone else. Live for yourself everyday and try and find your happiness.
"I once had a dream So I packed up and split for the city I soon found out that my lonely life wasn't so pretty"
As said by ChaoesFluro24, this song resignates a lot of what many people feel at the present time in their life, or have once felt. It is once agan a Wilson great which exposes the feelings of a young adult who believes he can do anything and wants to experience everything. This theme fills the Pet Sounds album. Another fantastic and perfect song on the album.
Pretty straight forward.
He left everything, including this girl he loved, in pursuit of his dream in a big city. He thought he could make it alone. But now he's feeling empty and lonely, and he regrets leaving his sweetheart behind.
If this "dream" was not pursued, would you feel... whatever... unsatisfied with your life? If you were alone with yourself, would you feel that you had to re-think your thoughts around yourself, or around others? Would you abandon everyone else just for yourself?
One of the better songs from the classic Pet Sounds album. Perfect pop.

SERIOUSLY UNDERATED!c'mon people!this is bloody brilliant and how i feel right now. I go to sixth form next year, and now i have to choose the lesson i want to do. The other's where easy but then it came to my fave lessons of Art and History. I'm doing history but it's eatin' me up inside. It may seem trivial but it is.This songs says everything about re-invention, to me it seems as though a boy from a small town has left his childhood sweetheart at home to "find himself" in a big city, but he soon ralises there was no point and that although he thought he would be happy away from small-time life he just isn't. The paradox to this song i guess is "Disney Girls" about one FROM a big town settling in a big city.My fave album by the way..x
He left everything he knew, including his girl, for his dream. Now he realizes his dream is pointless if he doesn't have everything he loves. But he doesn't regret it, because now he's "that much more sure" that he needs his girl.
I just saw the film "Love & Mercy". It's too bad Mike Love couldn't see this song for the classic it really is.
@SusanBassPlayer At least it didn't seem to hold back his vocals.
