This song is about a guy who cares for a girl enough to tell him not to trust him.
I like this song a lot. I think "try try again and again it falls flat... and I can't find my hat" either is a reference to Catcher In The Rye's Holden Caulfield and his red hat (the hat symbolized his wanting to be an individual) or since people wear hats when it's cold out, it could mean he's not prepared.
I love this song. It has about the best beginning ever, I still get goose bumps when I hear it...
