Burning Times Lyrics
Forget not the days of old
And recall the stories told
Of the burnings and the screams
Do they ever haunt your dreams?
There was a time when freedom died
It was an age of genocide
The Inquisition at the door
The Church of Rome in a holy war
They broke children on the wheel
In the madness of their zeal
In the shadow of their wake
The innocent burning at the stake
Children resist a return to the burning times
People be wise to the power of their lies
Be not fooled as those who were fooled before
Children, oh children, be free, be wild
They came to bring the ‘good news’
To burn witches, pagans, Jews
Said they were the Shepherd’s sheep
Whipped old women through the streets
Then the turning of the tide
From the truth they could not hide
Now the darkest age has passed
The Goddess has returned at last!
And recall the stories told
Of the burnings and the screams
Do they ever haunt your dreams?
There was a time when freedom died
It was an age of genocide
The Inquisition at the door
The Church of Rome in a holy war
They broke children on the wheel
In the madness of their zeal
In the shadow of their wake
The innocent burning at the stake
Children resist a return to the burning times
People be wise to the power of their lies
Be not fooled as those who were fooled before
Children, oh children, be free, be wild
They came to bring the ‘good news’
To burn witches, pagans, Jews
Said they were the Shepherd’s sheep
Whipped old women through the streets
Then the turning of the tide
From the truth they could not hide
Now the darkest age has passed
The Goddess has returned at last!

This is one of my fav songs by them. They are incredible musicians. Singing about to basically avoid the mistakes of yesterday by persecuting us pagans out of fear.
"Children resist a return to the burning times" I wonder what exactly that means.
It's a song about accepting people, no matter their beliefs. "Children resist a return to the Burning Times" just means that if we dont accept these people, it will be like the burning timems over again.
I think this could apply to people who are Pagan also, because I know a lot of Pagan people who have something against Christian people or whoever... maybe one day it will be us doing the persecuting?
"maybe one day it will be us doing the persecuting?"
I don't see that as very likely, as pagans do not believe that they have the Only Truth and everyone else are wrong. Pagans in general haven't harmed others in the name of their religious views, there have been other reasons - not that it would make the situation much better...
I love this song, the fact that it also has an important message just makes it even better. The melody sounds somehow familiar though, but I can't figure out where I've heard it before.
Wiccan Childe, I know what you mean about the existence of preachy-Pagan "bigots" - I met someone like that on the London goth scene who made Patricia Kenneally look moderate by comparison.
