Emily Lyrics

Woke up to find
I lost my mind
Lost heart, lost nerve
I lost my favourite word -
Emily

I take my cigarettes
I give 'em a smoke
Oh god
My heart feels froze
I've lost something it seems
I've misplaced my favourite thing -
Emily

Where does love go
If it can't find a home
One moment here then gone
With no forwarding address
Love no longer has a house
Or residence in flesh
Take the keys
I get in the car
To out run this
man I'd have to go real far
Where mercy wears lace
And bottles are thieves
Which of these took you from me?
Emily

I face myself
But there's this draft inside
Parts of me drowned
In perpetual tide
I wanna call names
I wanna throw things around
But no bar can buy
Forgiveness another round for
Emily

I go to the bedroom
Turn on the light
It's like an empty altar
No angel in sight
religion with no temple
No place to take my worship to
No god for my eyes to see
No fruit to lay at the feet of
Emily
Gone
Gone

Okay, so I suppose that I'm the first Emily that is commenting on this song. This should be interesting seeing as how I am able to respond without bias :). I am a Jewel fan, however, and I must say that this is a great song. I absolutely love it. I even love the name Emily.

Guess I'm the first non-Emily to comment on this song. But I gotta say, this song is awesome!! I just love it! No one's said anything about what they think it means either, but I've got a few thoughts... I reckon she's singing about losing this girl Emily (I kinda imagine Emily to be a child/teen), and it's all about these strong feelings of how much she cared for Emily, and now there's no Emily to love anymore, and she's so sad...

Woke up to find I lost my mind Lost heart, lost nerve I lost my favourite word - Emily

I take my cigarettes I give 'em a smoke Oh god My heart feels froze I've lost something it seems I've misplaced my favourite thing - Emily

(These 2 verses r simple- just saying how much losing Emily has affected her)

Where does love go If it can't find a home One moment here then gone With no forwarding address Love no longer has a house Or residence in flesh

(Chorus is simple too- Emily (is the 'home'/'flesh')is no longer there, so her love has no place to be. It used to be in Emily, but no that Emily's gone, her love has nowhere to go)

Take the keys I get in the car To out run this man I'd have to go real far Where mercy wears lace And bottles are thieves Which of these took you from me? Emily

(Well obviously, it's to outrun this pain, hurt, this situation... But I'm not quite sure what she means by the mercy, etc and bottles, etc lines. Any thoughts?)

I face myself But there's this draft inside Parts of me drowned In perpetual tide I wanna call names I wanna throw things around But no bar can buy Forgiveness another round for Emily

(Well, simply this 'draft inside' and the 'perpetual tide' is part of the gap and the hurt -grief- that's left behind now that she's lost Emily. She's angry and upset, which is why she wants to call names, etc. Once again, not quite sure about 'no bar can buy forgiveness'... Any thoughts on that? And I think she just means, lets have another round for Emily.)

I go to the bedroom Turn on the light It's like an empty altar No angel in sight religion with no temple No place to take my worship to No god for my eyes to see No fruit to lay at the feet of Emily

(I reckon it's Emily's bedroom she's gone into, and Emily is no longer, so therfore- no angel (Emily) in sight. And all that 'worship', 'god', 'fruit' stuff is just showing how deeply devoted she was to Emily, and now her devotion and love are homeless

Gone Gone

(Need I even explain this one? Duh... Haha. Uh yeh. She's gone.)
