Loretta Young Silks

Loretta Young's cameraman created a technique to soften and enhance her image by placing silk stockings over the camera lens. The resulting image of Loretta was much softer and idealized. Also, Loretta was a symbol of vanity and decadence in her time, known for her elaborate clothes and make-up. Loretta Young represents an impossible, idealized image. In the context of the song she represents the vanity, shallowness, and obsession with perfection that a girl has.

If i'm not mistaken, Loretta Young was a famous actress in the early 1930s. It sounds like he is comparing someone to Loretta Young in the sense that the girl is acting most of the time, she is fake and she puts on a show for everyone, never really showing who she really is however everyone seems to see through her. Everyone knows how truly fake she is so she isn't really fooling anyone at all but instead making herself look stupid.

Yeah, so aren't we supposed to discuss the MEANING of the lyrics? I think this song is about a supershallow girl who hides and protects herself from feeling anything by being aggressive (swaping your love for hate) and with fashion.

This song is amazing; Sneaker Pimps are amazing. I'm addicted to more or less every song they push out the door, but this is by far one of my favorites.

Winston's right. I think it's pretty obvious to everyone except Supersapien that it's "fashioning your self-escape", not "Fashiooning yourself as gay".

Deathcab seems to have a good interpretation. The 'Silks' tie in to the idea of 'fashion', putting up a false front.

There is a tune on the new record called "LORETTA YOUNG SILKS" after the practice, invented by her cameraman, of placing silk stockings over the lens to achieve a soft focus. The song is about vanity and soft focussing yourself and, as such has nothing to do with Loretta herself but out of idle curiosity we went on to the official Loretta Young site and downloaded a pic of her that looked back at us every day. Sneaker Pimps do not believe in the pre-destined but there was something pretty spooky about the fact that she died the very day we left the house.Howe affirms. “I think in that way we are quite obsessed with tragic forms like Loretta Young; she was someone opposite of the character she portrayed.”

WOW winston is SOO RIGHT the lyrics on like 4 sites I have been too say the "you sell Loretta Young Silks" lyrics but the lyrics in the wrong one say "Not happy for anyone" and when you listen carefully it MOST DEFINITELY SAY "HABBIT" fuck, I hate when someone gets the lyrics way wrong cause there are a lot of other little words that are way wrong like "no CONTEST for self-esteem" when it clearly says "CONTEXT" jesus... lol

i've always thought the line was actually "you sew loretta young silks." it sounds right, goes with the line that follows it, and unlike the alternative "you're so loretta young silks"(??), it makes logical sense.

though i might be wrong.
