Roll Me Away Lyrics

Took a look down a westbound road right away I made my choice
Headed out to my big two wheeler I was tired of my own voice
Took a bead on the northern plains and just rolled that power on

Twelve hours out of Machinaw City stopped in a bar to have a brew
Met a girl and we had a few drinks and I told her what I'd decided to do
She looked out the window a long long moment then she looked into my eyes
She didn't have to say a thing I knew what she was thinkin'

Roll roll me away won't you roll me away tonight
I too am lost I feel double crossed and I'm sick of what's wrong and what's
right
We never even said a word we just walked out and got on that bike
And we rolled
And we rolled clean out of sight

We rolled across the high plains
Deep into the mountains
Felt so good to me
Finally feelin' free
Somewhere along a high road
The air began to turn cold
She said she missed her home
I headed on alone

Stood alone on a mountain top starin' out at the Great Divide
I could go east I could go west it was all up to me to decide
Just then I saw a young hawk flyin' and my soul began to rise
And pretty soon
My heart was singin'

Roll roll away I'm gonna roll me away tonight
Gotta keep rollin' gotta keep ridin' keep searchin' till I find what's right
And as the sunset faded I spoke to the faintest first starlight
And I said next time
Next time
We'll get it right

One of those truly great power-ballads.

Just that desire to be free and that great feeling of infinite possibility...god, it's beautiful.

Another Bob Seger masterpiece! This song just makes me want to get in my car, roll down the windows, crank up some good music, drive out to some country side where theres no traffic, just beautiful countryside, and just drive the hell out of my car! "Roll Me Away" is like so many classic country "road" songs, BUT it is sooo much more. The scene about the young lady heading back home has much significance. It's talking about the independence, pride, and "balls" of a loner; a person who knows where he stands in life, loves his freedom, won't let anything or anybody stand in the way of "livin'" life. As Merle Haggard sang about, such a person believes that "down every road, there's always one more city. I'm on the road, the highway is my home" (from Merle Haggard, "Lonesome Fugitive"). Great song from the a great song writer and singer.

I was on my way to do a Triathlon and this song came on the radio and I found myself cranking the volume as the song went on.It really pumped me up and got me motivated for my race. I got a personal best in my race and decided to look up the meaning of the song and comment. Thanks for all the comments. Love this song and will put it on my mp3 for another great training song. Cheers!!

"Next time we'll get it right"...what does it mean?

@Andjelina pretty obvious - he met a girl in a bar, she wanted to come with him, and she did, but when he wanted to keep going she decided she missed her home and family - so she left him and he went on alone - he looked at the hawk soaring and said that is me - and then at the first star - saying next time he meets someone special he'll get it right... Kind of a play of wish upon a star...

@Andjelina That’s my favorite part of the song… the grand climax! I don’t think it’s obvious at all, especially with his angst throughout the entire song, even before the met the girl. Perhaps he was getting away from a failed part of his life when he first headed out. It seems to speak to a more general tendency of humans to screw things up and yet striving to make things better.
