Deep Water Lyrics
When you find yourself falling down
Your hopes in the sky by your heart like grape gum on the ground
And you try to find yourself
In the abstractions of religion and the cruelty of everyone else
And you wake up, to realize your standard of living somehow got stuck on survive.
And when you're standing in deep water
And you're bailing yourself out with a straw
When you're drowning in deep water
And you wake up making love to a wall
Well it's these little times that help to remind
It's nothing without love
When you realize your only friend has never been yourself or anyone who cared in the end
Thats when, everything fades or falls away
Cause the chains which once held us are only the chains which we've made.
And when you're standing in deep water
And you're bailing yourself out with a straw
When you're drowning in deep water
And you wake up making love to a wall
Well it's these little times that help to remind
It's nothing without love, love, love
It's nothing without love.
We sacrifice our pride, compromised our health
We must demand more, not of each other, but more from ourselves
Cause when you're standing in deep water
And you're bailing yourself out with a straw
When you're drowning in deep water
And you wake up making love to a wall
Well it's these little times that help to remind
It's nothing without love, love, love
It's nothing without love
It's nothing without love
Your hopes in the sky by your heart like grape gum on the ground
And you try to find yourself
In the abstractions of religion and the cruelty of everyone else
And you wake up, to realize your standard of living somehow got stuck on survive.
And you're bailing yourself out with a straw
When you're drowning in deep water
And you wake up making love to a wall
Well it's these little times that help to remind
It's nothing without love
Thats when, everything fades or falls away
Cause the chains which once held us are only the chains which we've made.
And you're bailing yourself out with a straw
When you're drowning in deep water
And you wake up making love to a wall
Well it's these little times that help to remind
It's nothing without love, love, love
It's nothing without love.
We must demand more, not of each other, but more from ourselves
And you're bailing yourself out with a straw
When you're drowning in deep water
And you wake up making love to a wall
Well it's these little times that help to remind
It's nothing without love, love, love
It's nothing without love
It's nothing without love

I am confused on one line of this song.... what does the line, "And you wake up making love to a wall..." mean??
When you don't think that you can stand it any more just remember whats important in life and go with the flow
NO MATTER WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE TO STRUGGLE LIFE IS NOTHING WITHOUT LOVE.
Drowning in deep water/ bailing yourself out w/ a straw= being in a bad situation, and not really caring to get ou of it.
Wake up making love to a wall= putting your lover on the back burner to your unhappiness.
It's nothing w/o love= everything you do in life doesn't even matter if you don't understand the meaning of love.
Just my interpretation.
I love this song. I think it's about trying to find yourself in a world where there are so many things and people telling you how it should be.. and of course the theme is that life is nothing without love.. When things get hard, it only reminds you how important the ones you love are - they will always be there for you.
I agree with emo_girl, but it also means something else to me when one of my friends lost her grandfather this song seemed to fit the time so perfectly
"Drowning in deep water and you're bailing yourself out with a straw"--being helplessly stuck in a bad situation against your will ("your hopes in the sky but your heart like grape gum on the ground") with little means to escape
"Wake up making love to a wall"--realizing that you're alone and without someone to love
"Well it's these little times that help to remind it's nothing without love"--of course, Jewel is expressing the importance of love but her words may also be laced with the irony of the situation. Your bad situation serves to reminder you that not only are you down and out but you're also without love.
I get the feeling that there is more plot to this song than can be directly interpreted by the lyrics. Perhaps it's about someone who broke up with a boyfriend or girlfriend only to realize that it was a bad decision.
I think... this song is about the struggle with depression. You're stuck in a vicious cycle that you can't get out of because you actually like it in a sick way (bailing yourself out with a straw). You get stuck on 'survive'. You're no longer living your life, you're not enjoying anything, you don't even notice the things going on around you. Everyday you just go through the actions. You hate who you are and try many things to find a 'you' you and everyone else can love (religion, cruelty, friends that don't care, lovers that are strangers). You really just make everything worse for yourself (you lose all pride and self-respect, and become both physically and mentally ill). You've made the chains which are holding you down. Then you realize the mess you're in, which only you can get yourself out of. You need to love yourself and demand more from yourself - nobody can fix it but you.
I agree with kaira - this song is about depression. Actually, about depression caused by loneliness. "wake yp making love to a wall", to me, is when you had a dream where you had a lover, and wake up to realize you are still alone. And the feeling you are going nowhere, meaning you have no love for a very long time.
I agree with Kaira. Very nicely written. : ) Also. I think "making love to a wall" is referring to waking up alone...with nobody to make love to? (like what Sportzzgal said)
