Virus Lyrics

It feeds on the souls of the living.
And gets inside their minds.
Transforms their brains and their longings,
No consciousness it will find.

It feeds on their fears and emotions,
As it has for 2000 years
Its infected the Hindus, infected the Buddhists,
Kept them all in tears.

If you're nearly dead, it will keep you alive.
And if you're alive, it keeps you nearly dead.
It forces the body to seek uninfected,
And gets inside their heads.

Once your brain is infected,
It changes what makes you pleased.
It forces your body to seek uninfected,
And add them to the diseased.

And in this way it crept slowly
All across the land
But the wise and the strong can still join forces
Defending our last stand

If you're nearly dead, it will keep you alive.
And if you're alive, it keeps you nearly dead.
It forces the body to seek the uninfected,
And gets inside their heads.

"It feeds on their fears and emotions, As it has for 2000 years "

Christianity, and how it plagues us like a virus.

"Its infected the Hindus, infected the Buddhists"

"westernised" religions corrupting other religions and belief systems

Chritianity and how it plagues us like a virus? Well aren't you the disgrunted prejudiced lil' Atheist ;) Yeah, tell all the people being fed; clothed; held; being given job training; and loved that Christianity is a virus. OMG, did you also say that westernized religions are corrputing other religions and belief systmes. I do believe 911 had occurred prior to your ignorant post. Never studied Islam beginnings, have you. You are just TOO funny.

Sounds like religion's infections.

Not just religion; any ideology or philosophy, the followers of which feel the need to force their way of thinking and living upon those with weaker wills.

I think they're using zombies as a sort of loose metaphor for religion, getting in your brains and causing you to seek out the "uninfected" to share your disease with them. It's an awesome metaphor, and I'm glad it's not an outright religious bashing. After all, Catholicism (and thus Christianity) and Islam are just about equally messed up, no matter what your bias is; this is in contrast to the far more peaceful and accepting Hinduism and Buddhism.

It's only those 2 lines that directly refer to religion ("As it has for 2000 years / It's infected the Hindus, infected the Buddhists"), so that's the only clue tying it in as a religious metaphor. Otherwise, yeah, zombies.

Actually, Abney Park has revealed the meaning of this song here: http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=20288331&blogId=510587484 . So it is about Christianity, they just didn't want to make it too obvious.

Seems like you typical virus from a zombie movie to me.

It's an interesting theory, and it has a very valid point... but as people have pointed out, the only religions/ideologies in the song itself are Hinduism and Buddism. Religion wouldn't make the followers of these religions cry. It's the same when you look at the yearsof infection (2000), most established religions are far older. But, dude, I'm not getting that. To me, this seems like a song about literal zombies, a post-apocalypse world filled with stumbling brain-eaters and a few last strongholds of civilization. At least, that's my own personal opinion answering the question "What does this song mean to you?". Sometimes a fish is a fish is a fish.
