Mother's Day Lyrics
I wanna know, do you have the balls to ask?
what do you see when you look at a girl?
is she a game you wanna win?
if no-one was looking what would you do to get in?
do you have friends who would be proud if you went in for the kill?
do you have friends who would do it even against her will?
what if they did that to your sister?
what if they did that to your mother?
why are we so slow?
i bet you think you're such a hottie, but a body afraid is not a sexual body.
everybody's been laughed at and everybody's been left out but
that's no excuse to turn it around, no boy has the right to hold a girl down.
on your star wars sheets when you set the scene,
was she seducing you, or did she want to scream?
it's you versus you.
i can't forget that tomorrow's mother's day.
i'm talking to you, you know who you are, going too far.
you'll feel good for ten seconds, she'll be screwed up for life.
blue balls and all of that bullshit.
what do you see when you look at a girl?
is she a game you wanna win?
if no-one was looking what would you do to get in?
do you have friends who would be proud if you went in for the kill?
do you have friends who would do it even against her will?
what if they did that to your mother?
everybody's been laughed at and everybody's been left out but
that's no excuse to turn it around, no boy has the right to hold a girl down.
was she seducing you, or did she want to scream?
i'm talking to you, you know who you are, going too far.
you'll feel good for ten seconds, she'll be screwed up for life.

this song is about rape... its ever so apparent. i remember hearing, back a few years ago, that nada surf's singer's girlfriend had been raped and that is responsible for a change in their music on proximity effect, naturally. that would make sense here... this is obviously a strong, angry, personal song. i can't imagine anyone capturing such aimed anger without having somet type of firsthand experience with rape. if you guys know anything more about this, please post...id really like to find out whats up here.
a friend of mine interviewed matthew from nada surf last year and he said that this song is pretty much a public service announcement. he said that he wrote this song with the idea of "if he had 4 minutes to say something important, this is what he would say". i think he did a pretty good job. as far as the personal nature of this song, i dont know for sure, but i'm sure there is some foundation there because robot also touches on this subject.
this song sends a really powerful message. Im glad there's some bands out there addressing things like rape, because music can be very influentual to kids who get into that stuff.
