Hyperspace Lyrics
hands up who thinks it's now
home base is the bathroom where the lights are bright
it's never too late if you know how
we got our own brand of hyperspace
you cannot change anyone
there is no peace, there's only sun
when you want to go, i know you will
and i can see it all and i'm ok, but i wish there was another way
there's no right and there's no wrong
there's just the balance of the things you know
home base is the bathroom where the lights are bright
it's never too late if you know how
we got our own brand of hyperspace
you cannot change anyone
there is no peace, there's only sun
when you want to go, i know you will
and i can see it all and i'm ok, but i wish there was another way
there's no right and there's no wrong
there's just the balance of the things you know

I just revisited this song after a very long time cause I forgot how much I loved it. Checked here and in the comments people seem to think it’s about war or relationships which kind of surprised me cause I thought it was about getting high in the bathroom.
Or to put it more poetically, it feels like it’s about finding beauty and appreciation for life and making peace with the universe, even if it means doing so by less than ideal means…like getting high in the bathroom.
when you want to go, i know you will. yeah, i love nada surf.
This song has so much energy! Listening to it makes me feel as if I have been hooked up to a really strong electrical current and my body is getting pumped ready to run out and sing it down the streets! The drum beat is also like a heart beat.
"There's no right and there's no wrong" i fundamently disagree with however i love the song, one of their best.
"there is no peace, there's only sun". Makes me want to go outside.
Okay, so the upbeat energy of the song kind of hides the meaning to this song. I think it's about war and/or peacekeeping in the middle east.
"Hands up who thinks its now." Wondering who agrees that this is a concern.
"Home base is the bathroom where the lights are bright." With the bright lights meaning American cities, calling them a bathroom, because they are not as clean and peaceful as they seem.
"Its never too late if you know how, we've got our own brand of hyperspace." Meaning America can go to war whenever they want, cause they have the power to almost change history to fit their schedule.
"You cannot change anyone, there is no peace, there's only sun." Meaning you cannot change the violent way of life of the people in these middle eastern countries.
"When you want to go, I know you will" Commenting on how whenever the government decides to go to war, they will, no matter what anyone else thinks.
"And I can see it all, and I'm okay. But I wish there was another way." Commenting on how even though the war is broadcast on television and you can see what's happening, and although its not affecting or hurting him in any direct way, he wishes there was another way.
"There's no right and there's no wrong. There's only the balance of the things you know." This is a strong statement, asking "who are we to decide which way of life is right, and which one is wrong." Because basically we think we are right because this is how we live, but they may think what they are doing is right, because that's how they've always lived.
What a strong song! I hope I got the meaning of it right, I can't really see what else this song could be about.
Crewbert, how you managed to turn a song about a relationship falling apart with incredible speed into a War metaphor is pretty amazing. I mean, I don't think the song has anything to do with the Middle East, but it's still an amazing operation.
