Rise Lyrics

Belly up in a sea of love
Drowning's good in a sea of funk
Drowning's good in a cedar love
I'll keep you there, I'll keep you there

So long...
So long...

City lights come back in June
Seems the sun has gone too soon
Miles away from anywhere
Feels so warm in the southern air

So long...
So long...

Absolutely my favorite Doves song. It seems more abstract, lyrically, so that one can apply their own meaning to it. Completely reminds me of being drunk on love on the most perfect summer nights, under the stars in the middle of the country during a night swim. The ultimate perfect relaxation.

Best guess is this about moving on with some subtle references to the closing of the Hacienda in the late 90s. The first verse certainly has an acid house era club vibe to it. Given Doves' first incarnation as Sub Sub was part of that Madchester scene and they were in the process of reinventing themselves, this could be a "so long" to that era and that part of their lives.

my dad found this band sometime when i was a little kid, and whenever this song would start, i would always think of grass for some reason. haha. but i sort of see this song as describing the lazy-days of summer, when you had fun ,or were silly, or something like that. yet those are the days you don't remember well once the summer is over.

This was one of those songs that convinced me that Doves were my favorite band. Starting with "words" on the album last broadcast, it was one of those things where I immediately downloaded all their albums I could find. Song after song blew me away. Thanks to nolan who had his ipod on shuffle one random day!

This song doesn't really have a specific meaning for me; it's more of a feeling. It makes me feel like I'm dreaming, or maybe it makes me feel a nostalgia for a certain dream, or maybe a culmination of all the dreams I've ever had. I get this feeling a lot, that it feels like normal life is like a dream, like I'm dreaming while awake, that certain things... landmarks, areas, times of day, seasons, weather... will trigger this dream feeling. It's extremely weird, and this song seems to trigger those feelings too.
