Adrian came home again last summer
Things just haven't been the same around here
People talk
People stare
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
An unfortunate accident in a canoe
Dr. said, 'I'm sorry, not much I can do'
The air was so still
His eyes did not blink
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
Little Mary Epperson liked him
She vowed always to watch after him
Still he did not move
Dr. said it's no use
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
BRIDGE: She sat by his side, watched the years fly by
He looked so fragile, he looked so small
She wondered why he was still alive at all
Everyone in town had that 'I'm so sorry look'
They talked in a whispered hush, said
'I'd turn the machines off'
But still she sat by his side
Said, 'life he won't be denied'
Oh Adrian, come out and play
Yellow flowers decorate his bedroom
Sign above his door says Welcome Home
But he just sits and stares
He's awake but still not there
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
BRIDGE And little Mary Apperson grew up lovely
She still comes to visit him on Sundays
He's like an unused toy
He's got big hands but the mind of a little boy
Oh, Adrian, come out and play
Adrian came home again last summer
Things just haven't been the same around here

I love this song! I love this song! It's so beautiful! And I'm seeing Jewel 31st May 02!!! at b'ham symphony hall!! I can't wait!
This song is so sad, and yet so beautiful. I can't get through it without crying. The fact that she stuck around for so long is so touching.
this song means to me, that its really sad that this kid went in to a coma and became mentally challenged, there was someone around my house that is like that.
ya, i find this the most saddest and beautiful song, although i find her first cd wasnt that great. but this song....
The saddest line of the song for me... "They talked in a whispered hush, said 'I'd turn the machines off' "
is it real? i mean, did she know somebody that this happened to...?

The way she sings this is what really got me. She seems to have such a quiet depth. I love it."And people talk, and people stare" can't you just imagine this the way she describes it? I mean. WHOA.
Most probably she knew somebody that this happened to...she practically cries in the song and you can hear the emotion. This song is truly beautiful...its simple yet powerful.
@Sophie400 no this is just a short story she made up and she did not know anyone personally

This is such a beautiful and touching song. When I was around ten or so, Jewel was my obsession. 'Pieces of You' was one of the first cd's I owned and this song was the one that was always on repeat. Eventually my mum got so tired of hearing this song that she threw my cd out the window. ;) It's by far my favourite Jewel album. I'm only a fan of her first two cd's, the more recent ones in my opinion weren't as well done and simple. And that's one of the things I love about this song. You don't need 500 instruments and add crazy sound effects to make it beautiful. It was simply done with heartfelt lyrics.
I love songs that tell a story.
So sad, yet so beautiful... her voice reflects the emotion. Yes, it seems as if she literally cries in this song... That is Jewel for you. Such a powerful and moving song and yet so simple...
