Energy Lyrics
Mother and Child
I'm such a man for a short while
Promises Be
The world just spins faster than me
All of your friends
Are now whispering
I think you left me for their government
All of your friends
I hope are listening
I wish you'd stop wasting all my energy
Beauty or beast
Which character am I to be
I'm now powdering
All the makeup that makes me
All of your friends
Are still whispering
I think you left me for their government
All of your friends
I hope are listening
I wish you'd stop sucking all my energy
I'm such a man for a short while
Promises Be
The world just spins faster than me
Are now whispering
I think you left me for their government
All of your friends
I hope are listening
I wish you'd stop wasting all my energy
Which character am I to be
I'm now powdering
All the makeup that makes me
Are still whispering
I think you left me for their government
All of your friends
I hope are listening
I wish you'd stop sucking all my energy

It's like he knows people are talking about him, and he's doing all he can do to cover up his dorkyness, and be cool, but then soon realizes, why 'waste my energy' to impress people whom I don't even socialize with?

i think its about a guy trying so hard to impress a girl he becomes some one he's not which he is getting tired of...its wasting his energy...she talked about him and bragged to all of her friends about the person he appeared to be and now that they broke up the truth is coming out and he wants everyone to know who he really is...that just my opinion =)
In order to find the meanings of songs, you have to know the music the artist creates and what kind of art they create. Collective Soul is not your typical "love them and leave them, one night drug stand" kind of band. Their music is deep, so you have to know something about what they are singing by listening to their library of music.
The song, "Energy", is not about love relationships. It is about religion and society. Note the words = "Mother and child" -- "beauty and beast" -- "you left me for the government", for example. Those are not, "come on, baby, let's do it" lyrics.
You have to listen to the music. What emotion is it evoking? What is this roller coaster ride I am on, here? -- The music is hard driving, fast paced, almost antagonistic. When you listen to "Energy" or "Heavy", don't you just want to go out and run somebody over with your car? Don't you want to just find someone and work them over real good? -- That is the mood, that is the SPIRIT of the song, that is what is behind the music, so to speak.
Finally -- these lyrics -- like many lyrics -- retain a certain level of ambiguity (vagueness, cloudiness, not clear what is meant). If a song is hard to figure out what it means? -- It means that there is a spiritual or religious aspect to it.
All that being said = after listening to Collective Soul's music for many years, what I see is that Energy is about a person who is becoming aware of what The System has authority over - his personal self. He played the game, he spoke the language, he talked the talk and walked the walk. But now, he sees this man-made, devilish system for the over-bearing political and evil that it really is. This song is about Identity, it is a "who I am" song -- it even says it = "I'm such a man for a short while."
I don't like to use the word - Woke - for such ideas, because that word - woke - has been hijacked by people who use this system to their advantage. Rest assured = those who say they are are "woke"? are not.
But this guy is aware and alert to his condition. And he is discussing this with a friend / ally / girlfriend / family member / someone friendly. He is expressing his fear that he is alone in this world -- and that we wants all of your friends and for you to stop wasting and sucking all of his Energy -- his Spirit, his Life, his Power, his animus -- his Energy.
I am telling you -- Collective Soul (ha - look at their band name, for crying out loud) -- is a deep band; they are not a "hey baby, let's get high and drunk" artist.

@pumpkinmachine idk I think you are projecting ideology that pertains to the 2020s to a song that was written almost 25 years ago. This song was written in 2001, so, think, what was going on with the government in 2001?
