Show Me The Way Lyrics
Every night I say a prayer in the hope that there's a heaven
And every day I'm more confused as the saints turn into sinners
All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay
And I feel this empty place inside so afraid that I've lost my faith
Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away
Please, show me the way
And as I slowly drift to sleep, for a moment dreams are sacred
I close my eyes and know there's peace in a world so filled with hatred
Then I wake up each morning and turn on the news to find we've so far to go
And I keep on hoping for a sign, so afraid that I just won't know
Show me the way, Show me the way
Take me tonight to the mountain
And take my confusion away
And if I see a light, should I believe
Tell me how will I know
Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away
Show me the way, show me the way
Give me the strength and the courage
To believe that I'll get there someday
Show me the way
Every night I say a prayer
In the hope that there's a heaven...
And every day I'm more confused as the saints turn into sinners
All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay
And I feel this empty place inside so afraid that I've lost my faith
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away
Please, show me the way
I close my eyes and know there's peace in a world so filled with hatred
Then I wake up each morning and turn on the news to find we've so far to go
And I keep on hoping for a sign, so afraid that I just won't know
Take me tonight to the mountain
And take my confusion away
Tell me how will I know
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away
Give me the strength and the courage
To believe that I'll get there someday
Show me the way
In the hope that there's a heaven...

He's asking for something to believe in, plain and simple. Looking for someone to baptize him (to take him to the river) and lead him (wash his illusions away- tell him/ teach him the right)... The world seems full of evil, everybody he believed in is weak or corrupt- he can't believe in them anymore. Strangely reminiscent of "Where have all the cowboys gone?" : men are men, just animals with big brains, not saints.
Shame that not many people listen to Styx... they're amazing. ANYWAY. I imagine that this holds some sort of religious/humanistic view: why are people, born so perfectly and innocent, so likely to turn around and do wrong? Show me the way to do right... The only hiatus from the insanity and hypocrisy of the world is in sleep.
... yeah.
This is one of those songs I can't listen to without crying...I know, I'm so pathetic...but it's an amazing, beutiful song. I agree that more people should listen to Styx.
Oh, about a few weeks ago, some kid made fun of me for crying when I listened to this song...then said he only cried from laughing too hard...that jerk...
This is mainly about him realizing the world's negative condition, and asking for someone to "show [him] the way" to improve it, and to keep from becoming mixed up in the negativity and hatred. He's asking to be purified, in a sense, and granted the strength to withstand each wrong the world will deal him, and he seems to be praying for the sake of the world and its people, in order to make life better and to stop the violence/hatred that's taken over.
I love Styx and this song. This song hits home for me. For me it's a song about someone who is so disappointed in mankind. He wakes up each morning and sees all the hate in the world and it hurts his heart. He's lost faith in mankind and he wants to believe but he is given no reason to do so.....Beautiful lyrics beautiful voice.
Recently one of my close friends died in a fatal car accident. I wasn't really religious or anything until that happened. I was on my way to her funeral and I turned on my car and this song came on. I interpret this song as being told that no matter how bad things get there is your faith and there is God and sometimes people just need to be shown the way back to God. I'm thankful for this song, it brought be back to my faith and I am now being able to deal with my friend's death.
