The Lie and How We Told It Lyrics
Talking words, angry words
Hang in the air, we don't dare
Sky went gray, wake in white
Hangs in the air, we don't dare
And there's a thousand reasons
I don't need them to help the fired flare
And even as we near it, I can't hear it
Files in the air
We don't dare
Hang in the air, we don't dare
Sky went gray, wake in white
Hangs in the air, we don't dare
I don't need them to help the fired flare
And even as we near it, I can't hear it
Files in the air
We don't dare

it is a very 'Yo La Tengo' song, Ira's typical hammer-ons, a D-chord progression similar to many earlier Yo La songs like 'I Heard You Looking'.. . maybe that's why they don't play this one as much...
I completely agree with everyzoe, just a great summer bike riding song. I think its about ignoring some inevitable end to a relationship or just ignoring some inevitable end in any aspect of life. The "we don't dare" refrain seems like an encouragement to ignore what the future holds and just enjoy the moment, but the second verse is pretty cryptic...
i think this song is about a rumor. and its true, but its a rumor that you couldn't think would be true. i think the refernces to "air" and "flies" stand for the rumor. how rumors float from people. and how when its about you, it drives you insane. my two cents
this song is amazing. i love how the vocals are really soft and in the background. one of yo la tengo's best songs
probably one of my favorite ylt songs. brings me back to the summer after 8th grade when i first got this album from my friends older brother. such humid drenched sounds. i could ride my bike to this all night long
