I'm Only Sleeping Lyrics
When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float upstream (float upstream)
Please don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping
Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Until they find there's no need (there's no need)
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all, I'm only sleeping
Keeping and eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time
Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all, I'm only sleeping
Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time
When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Staying in bed, float upstream (float upstream)
Please don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping
Lift my head, I'm still yawning

I think john is singing about living in a lucid state of living. he is living his dream. people are so up tight john is let it be. people care about their possesions john cares about people. I can see how this song flows to imagine. a lot of ideas from the beatles translate into his solo work
Once, my mother said to me, "I think you can be quite lazy at times," and I replied with, "I don't mind, I think you're crazy," Haha, good times. xD
Anyway, I relate to this song, because it's sorta like, "Just let me sleep," Like, anytime you try to have a good lie-in, there's always some reason you have to get up. Your phone is ringing and you left it downstairs, your parents insist that you have to clean the house, and worst of all, school. I just want some time to dream.
It's awesome how John Lennon could take something that a lot of people feel, and make it into a great psychedelic rock song.
this song is about smoking pot. seriously. if you smoke pot, you'll understand
this song almost made me cry the other day. i don't think it was the lyrics. i think it was john lennon's voice.
@TheMoonTellsMEaSecret Yes mate same here....i was never so much a beatles fan but i ve been listening them a lot these days...im from brazil and ve been working in india for 3 months, and the indian elements on the album are so amazing when you can relate to the indian culture i feel everyday... i put this album to play and went for taking a shower , when i heard this song starting so beatifully, so quiet and sweet, man i cried....it is pure as its gets... i love Lennon capacity of being honest...doesnt matter if the guy was rich and...

I haven't read many comments on this, but I agree that this is not about any lazy person. I think that it is about someone who is unconscious to the world as a whole and all the beautiful things that expanding your perceptions can bring. In short, I think it's about ignorance and how some people see it as bliss.
What I thought was really fun about this song was that at about 2:03, the backwards guitar is playing at the end of the chorus and then you can hear one of them yawn. When I heard this for the first time I yawned after I heard it. I think that the Beatles were trying to make the listener yawn.
If you look at the cover of "Beatles for Sale" you will see what somoking dope and promoting the Beatles across the world does to a young Beatle. John was plain knackered. We all know the feeling of needing just 5 more minutes, that's all the song is about.
"Everybody seems to think I’m lazy. I don’t mind, I think they’re crazy." What great lines and it is so true sometimes (more often than not). I was not aware of that Bobo, how funny.
I sing this and "I'm So Tired" all the time while I'm at work.
Haha. Apparently Lennon wasn't a morning person.
This song is one of my favorite Beatles tunes (although I think The Vines' version is even better!) because I relate to it so much... as do all insomniacs and non-morning people.
brokendownpunk, no offense, but not every Beatles song is about drugs. Okay, Lucy In The Sky definatly was, but I doubt this one is.
@jopkins_the_monkey 'Lucy in the sky' wasn't actually about an LSD trip. John Lennon was inspired by his son's drawing of a friend (Lucy) whom he drew in a sky. 'I am the walrus' is their infamous 'druggie' song:)

@jopkins_the_monkey actually, the song is not a reference to LSD. He's said many times that it's the title of a drawing Julian made of or for his schoolmate friend Lucy O'Donnell Haddon (sic) who.passed away a few years ago..It was confirmed by McCartney who was there, and Julian himself. John was known to love his bed. One of the greatest love songs Paul wrote,, "For No One"was done while he was waiting by John's pool as he was still sleeping and didn't come down until much.later than planned John loved Lewis Carroll and the imagery shows that, not a drug induced...

On John Lennon's "Watching the Wheels" he sings, "People say I'm lazy; dreaming my life away." I always thought it was a quote from this song. Whether it was or not, I don't really know. I still like to believe it was, though.
