Dennis Deyoung has always been a boundless optimist. He is not a cynic like Leonard Cohen and he is not a zealot like REM or U2 for their causes. This always appealed to me. This song is about his sense of love for the individual no matter who they are. This is a theme that we see through Dennis' song and in his solo work.
Its about not conforming to other people. Just be yourself and you'll be a lot happier.
