The Beaten Path Lyrics
Yesterday came and went and I wasn't present
The weeks were laid out like pavement
Work and drink and sleep, repeat
Upon the beaten path I kept on my blinders
Don't need any old reminders
No face, no name, no memories
If you love it, you leave it
Because you hate that you need it
It's one thing you can't have
You're too self-absorbed to change
Always, "My way"
Tomorrow could come and go
And I'd sleep right through it
I'm not searching for self-improvement
I'm sticking to the beaten path
Here and there I come across an old acquaintance
Some old flame, some old burn victim
I remember I need to forget everything I ever said to you
If I could take it back, I'd eat every word
You want to feel like all those others feel
But you won't and you never will
All that you love you lose
You do
The weeks were laid out like pavement
Work and drink and sleep, repeat
Upon the beaten path I kept on my blinders
Don't need any old reminders
No face, no name, no memories
If you love it, you leave it
Because you hate that you need it
It's one thing you can't have
You're too self-absorbed to change
Always, "My way"
And I'd sleep right through it
I'm not searching for self-improvement
I'm sticking to the beaten path
Here and there I come across an old acquaintance
Some old flame, some old burn victim
I remember I need to forget everything I ever said to you
If I could take it back, I'd eat every word
You want to feel like all those others feel
But you won't and you never will
All that you love you lose
You do

the beaten path is a metaphor for daily life, the monotony of routine, day after day he gets up, works, drinks, and sleeps, its depressing kasher but he sticks to it cuz there really is no way to break the routine and be successful, he is obviously stressed and depressed about the cycle of wake work sleep repeat... This song is not about a significant other but tim kasher often references love in many songs on different topics
A guy who is depressed by old memories of someone who is selfish, but who he still loves and can't get over. he doesn't want to change, he wants to remain himself, he would rather for his ex/old lover to change and become less selfish. pretty self-explanitory, but if you disagree post it you little bitches.
"when you got nothing... you got nothing to lose." -bob dylan
seems like it's more about being stuck in rutine but being too lathargic to want to change.
or scared to change
well you also gotta put this song in context of the concept album. this is the beginning of the story when the hero / Tim Kasher IS stuck in a rut and needs some way to get out, i.e. Off The Beaten Path.
I agree with hippie, it does sound as though he's singing mostly about himself in this song.
One of my alltime favorites by Tim Kasher
oh, a path that never changes.
