Stay Beautiful Lyrics
Find your faith in your security
All broken up at seventeen
Jam your brain with broken heroes
Love your masks and adore your failure
We're a mess of eyeliner and spray paint
D.I.Y. destruction on Channel chic
In this culture of consumption
This is the culture of destruction
Don't want to see your face
Don't want hear your words
Why don't you just
Babes on the run with poisoned lips
Wrap your arms round this everlasting kiss
Clinging to your own sense of waste
All we love is lonely wreckage
Your school your dole and your cheque book dreams
Your clothes your suits and your pension schemes
Now you say you know how we feel
But don't fall in love 'cause we hate you still
Don't want to see your face
Don't wanna hear your words
Why don't you just
Destroyed by madness
Destroyed by madness
Destroyed by madness
Destroyed by madness
Anxiety is freedom
All broken up at seventeen
Jam your brain with broken heroes
Love your masks and adore your failure
D.I.Y. destruction on Channel chic
In this culture of consumption
This is the culture of destruction
Don't want hear your words
Why don't you just
Wrap your arms round this everlasting kiss
Clinging to your own sense of waste
All we love is lonely wreckage
Your clothes your suits and your pension schemes
Now you say you know how we feel
But don't fall in love 'cause we hate you still
Don't wanna hear your words
Why don't you just
Destroyed by madness
Destroyed by madness
Destroyed by madness
Anxiety is freedom

I agree about the cutting of the line "fuck off." I think it is some kind of a statement against all the bands who pepper their songs with swear words just for the sake of it, or indeed just to be notorious.
I doubt they dropped the line simply because they wanted to release it as a single. Don't forget they were going to release Yes as a single but they refused to remove the Cunts line.
I love this song, it's just so full of the manics early anger and desire to make an impact, with lines like "don't fall in love cos we hate you still!". classic. And i reckon the way James cuts out the obvious omitted swear words with a cunning scrape of guitars only adds to that. The ending declaration "anxiety is freedom" also sounds very 1984, like the party statements from the book: "War Is Peace; Freedom Is Slavery; Ignorance Is Strength"
A song for the disaffected youth.
yea, or it might just be a classy little idea they had cos it sounds cool. I know the manics are packed with meaning, but let's not go mad here
Well yeah, it wasn't the manics' idea as such to drop the line, but the idea during recording was that it was to be released as a single, and so obviously a clean version had to be produced. But i still reckon its a cool way of doing so, while still being blatantly obvious what comes next in the line
Has anyone ever seen this live? Thousands of people screaming "Why don't you just... FUCK OFF?" at the same time, it's brilliant!
They'd have to remove more than that line in 'Yes'...what about the chorus??
Anyway, good song, great lyrics
But then again the idea of Generation Terrorists was to sell a million albums and then disappear into obscurity. 8 albums, a "greatest hits" and a "secret history" later they're still going.
Not a very consistent message.
"Has anyone ever seen this live? Thousands of people screaming "Why don't you just... FUCK OFF?" at the same time, it's brilliant! "
exactly. thats pretty much the point of that bit, its so the crowd can yell fuck off at them
