So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Drugs come out of boredom babe
U.N. exports it everyday
Their armies feed the ghetto lame
Government approve it just the same
Daylight bores the sunshine out of me
I need to feel alone amongst the weeds
Daylight bores the sunshine out of me
I need to feel, I need to feel,
I need to feel, I need to feel
We need and we will always need
Another invented disease
We need and we are taught to need
Another invented disease
Left alone in corporate slums
Where germs are free not amex fun
Healthy bodies in empty minds
Only exist in advert time
Daylight bores the sunshine out of me
I need to feel alone amongst the weeds
Daylight bores the sunshine out of me
I need to feel, I need to feel,
I need to feel, I need to feel
We need and we will always need
Another invented disease
We need and we are taught to need
Another invented disease
Sunk deep in my T.V.
Maybe sucked the soul from within me
We need and we will always need
Another invented disease
We need and we are taught to need
Another invented disease
We need and we will always need
Another invented disease
We need and we are taught to need
Another invented disease

There's nothing that explicitly says in the lyrics anything about a belief in AIDS being engineered in a lab. But the line "Their armies feed the ghetto lame. Government approve it just the same" could refer to the conspiracy theory (although there is very strong evidence showing it is true) that crack-cocaine was pushed into the ghettos by the CIA-Contra debacle. This would keep the underclass forever the underclass by giving them criminal records either for using or selling the drugs that would prevent them ever getting good jobs.
But the rest of it seems, as my nothing pointed out, seems to be about the evils of consumer culture. If you make people believe there is something wrong with them (they don't dress cool enough, their teeth aren't white enough, they need to cover skin blemishes, ect, ect, infinite ect) then you can sell them a cure. And in the age of American prescription drug ads that are marketed to let people know they have a disease they didn't know they had so they should talk their doctor into letting them buy the over-priced cure.....it's especially resonating.
MBlack - That's an excellent wrap of this song. I had a vague notion along these lines about it, but you articulated it so well.

Great work!

"We've got a song called 'Another Invented Disease', which is about how the more things you need, the less you actually are. We got signed to CBS for a lot of money, right. But none of us bought anything, except portable CD players and stuff. Then, two months later, another one came out that was thinner and I bought that one. It was no value to my life. It just means I have a smaller CD player." (Richey James)
The song is actually about the conspiracy theory that was circulating in the early ninties in regards to the AIDS virus supposedly being manufactured in a New York laboratory as a means of culling homosexuals and other inadequacies in our society.
Hence, AID being an acronym for Another Invented Disease.
I know it's not, but I always thought it was about consumerism, you know the way you're thought that there's something wrong with you and it can only be cured through having the latest car or Gilette razor or whatever. Should 'ianadequacies' not be in brackets LaTragedieHumaine? I'm sorry but it implies homophobia.
The lines "drugs come out of boredom babe" and "Daylight bores the sunshine out of me, I need to feel alone amongst the weeds" make me think of escaping from reality through "intentional" diseases (drug use).
But I may be wrong of course.
I didn't know about the AIDS conspiracy theory, any ideas where I could find out more about it?
No, sorry, but I know there are a few unreliable resources on the net. I believe that it was proven wrong, but there are still people who believe it is true.
Just use a search engine to find it. I am sure you'll find some stuff to read up on as well as a heap of other interesting theories.
