this song is so incredibly beautiful, it makes me cry. I do think its about losing urself and letting someone else have that "special" thing letting go of it so eaisily.

i abolutely love this song. when i listen to it, i think of past relationships, current relationships... and everything in between. HOWEVER... i was always under the impression that this was about death. i don't know why that is... i thought i knew, but apparently... i know nothing.

Favorite Dishwalla song for sure. I think it's funny how so many people see it as being about sex, because while I can see how it can be interpreted as such there's an intense, haunting, deeply human sort of quality to it that makes the lyrics resonate so much deeper. Can't pin down the meaning, but if you listen the song you feel it.

this song is so beautiful. i think it might be about someone who has lost someone and is so depressed that she'll do anything to make the pain go away, even if just for a moment. i think the point of the "take me over" is that the grief is consuming her entire life and she just wants it to go away. makes me cry!

This song isn't about sex but about death. The candle shrine is created at the location of someone who passed away and is an act of paying respect to the deceased. The woman tending to the candle shrine lost someone very important such as a significant other, son or daughter. She wants the candles to burn for her when she dies. "take me over when i'm gone".

Many seem to think this song is about either love/lovemaking or death – I think it is about both – a candle burning can symbolize so many things - light’s possible triumph over darkness, the question of life’s conquest of death, bearing the remembrance of a loved one or even a unity candle at a wedding when two distinct flames become one

Thanks to all for providing meaning to this fantastic song by Dishwalla. I had heard the song many times and always thought the song was about prostitution due to the lyrics of her waiting for someone on the street and laying down on her back. So it was sort of depressing but so great to listen to. However, I had never actually read the lyrics themselves until today. Now I understand the song to relate to death via the candle shrine which makes it much more depressing. After reading the lyrics today and all of the above interpretations I had a long cry. I was not sure why the lyrics now touched such a nerve with me until I remembered something I not thought about for many years --- that was the death of my first son many years ago. Even then I couldn't identify why these lyrics triggered such a response from a man who shows little to no emotions. The answer was that my son would have been 30 years old this very month, a fact that I had completely forgot about until today. They say that a parent should never outlive their children as losing them is too damn painful.

This is just an incredibly beautiful song with so much emotion put into it and it has meant so many things to me in the past few months. It makes me cry nearly every time I listen to it, and I'm not even sure why...I have no clue what it's supposed to mean, but I know what it means to me...there's a candle that burns (so to say) in every relationship, and let's just say that I hope this one keeps burning strong.

i'm not sure, but i talked about it with one of my friends and we came to the conclusion that this song might also be about like how girls give themselves away to guys so easily, sometimes realizing what they're doing and sometimes not. Sex is really casual now and it's "so easy how we come undone" and give ourselves away. Anyway, thats just what it means to me...probably way off from the actual meaning.
