the guy in the song screwed up big time and he knows it, he knew he was doing it and he didnt care, the when the person found out he saw how much he had hurt them and feels shit about it!
its all about gary lightbody cos he's always been a bit of a prik to women and he cheated on them loads and loads. see, every word fits.
^^^^ That comment made me laugh, there is no proof he was cheating on the person in this song, and even if he was doesn't mean he makes a habit of it. I agree that he has written many songs that may imply cheating, but often several songs can be written from one situation displaying different aspects of it.
Or maybe he just made it all up.

Anyway, sounds like Gary hurt the girl. People/friends know. Now he's feeling extremely guilty as to how he hurt the girl and then attempted to hide his guilt.
