Mezzanine Lyrics

I'm a little curious of you in crowded scenes
And how serene your friends and fiends
We flew and strolled as two eliminated gently
Why don't you close your eyes and reinvent me

You knew you had a heart made of stone
You should have let me know
You could have let me know

We'll go 'till morning comes
And traffic grows
And windows hum

Spending all week with your friends
Give me evenings and weekends
Evenings and weekends

I could be yours
We can unwind
All these half floors
All these half floors

You'd agree it's a typical high
You fly as you watch your name go by
And once the name goes by
Not thicker than water nor thicker than mud
And the eight k thuds it does
Sunset so quickly
Let's make it quiet and quickly
Don't frown
Tastes better on the way back down

I could be yours
We can unwind
All these half floors
All these half floors
All these half floors
Will lead to mine

We are the curious

We can unwind
All these half floors
All these half floors
Will lead to mine
Will see to
All these half floors
All these half floors
Will see to
All these half floors
Will lead to mine
We can unwind all half floors
We can unwind all half floors

Actually, I think he's saying "All these half floors" which would fit with the title "mezzanine" . And yeah, this song is great!

I hear "all these other floors will lead to mine" having 2 floors and one mezzanine, it make sense.

I feel its like a reverence to the state in between being single of having a partner. Not ready for a commitment but sick of being single all the options will lead to this (floor)

I've listened to this song so many times, but never really thought about it.. I also hear 'half-floors' and it plays into my interpretation of the song.. It's about half of a relationship.

'Why don't you close your eyes and reinvent me' 'Give me evenings and weekends' 'I could be yours' 'watch your name go by' 'let's make it quiet and quickly'

He's got a physical relationship, encounters now and then, but not the whole thing. 'All these half-floors will lead to mine.' All this playing around will lead to him falling hard in love, bigger relationship, broken heart, etc..

There are some other errors to the lyrics, as I hear them:

  • 'We flew and strolled as two eliminated gently' sounds like 'illuminated gently'
  • 'will see to' sounds like 'or seem to' as in 'all these half-floors will lead to mine... or seem to'

So, all these half-floors/physical relationships that aren't the real deal will lead to his floor->heart being broken [or whatever], or at least that's the way it seems...

My Interpretation

Very insightful interpretation, Wimmachine, and thanks for pointing out the errors in the lyrics.

I could never fathom how the sexual references related to the rest of the song, the chorus in particular. Your interpretation, however, seems to bridge this gap in my mind. The references to sex establish that there is a physical relationship (a very intense one I presume, as 3D says "we'll go 'till morning comes"), yet the emotional/psychological bond is not quite there. The man clearly wants more from the woman (time, attention, and possibly commitment), but she is not making herself available.

...

i hear 'illuminated gently' as well

I like your interpretation! And yeah it's definitely FLOORS,not flaws... though while watching some of the live performances of Mezzanine and also on their concerts I hear "all these other floors" and not "half-floors". I also hear "illuminated gently". ^^

Between 2:07 and 2:18 with those distortions are probably my favorite 11 seconds of trip hop ever recorded.

This passage stuck out to me as well. SO groovy.

He's trying to convince her that the intimacy in their relationship is more rewarding than the acquaintances of her fame/success; to not fear stepping off that pedestal, that his love can hold her and she won't get hurt if she lets go of her pride/vanity and just focus on their love, the most important, fulfilling thing in their life together.

@beanbagchair Ah I really like this interpretation, seems to hit home.

@beanbagchair that's a very interesting perspective on the content of the song. I've given a sense of two lovers distant in some ways and a lack of effort to commit on both sides. one of my favorite songs.

I think 3D wanted a pun on "flaws" and "floors." Or if he didn't, then I DO, so THERE. ;-) The correct lyrics should be "all these other floors / will lead to mine." But I like to think of it as saying all these other FLAWS will lead to mine, because it's more sinister that way.

It's about some kind of weird codependent relationship. It's clear that the protagonist wants more than just sex... (hence the lamenting "you have a heart of stone etc.). I could be yours seems to me like a plea more than anything.

F-ing brilliant track. I will never tire of this CD. Absolutely worth it to buy. Even better with headphones. This is the best track, especially the drums/percussive sounds.
