Birds Fly Backwards Lyrics
Sad, blue, the world is upside down
And birds fly backwards
Cats, dogs, fall first upon the ground
And birds fly backwards
Packed bags in the hallway
Where we used to play all day
We're hitting the road that
Leads us back again
Sad, blue, the future's not too clear
And birds fly backwards
Clouds tower, I have nothing to fear
And birds fly backwards
Packed bags in the hallway
Where we used to play all day
We're hitting the road that
Leads us back again
To the same old world we left
And birds fly backwards
Cats, dogs, fall first upon the ground
And birds fly backwards
Where we used to play all day
We're hitting the road that
Leads us back again
And birds fly backwards
Clouds tower, I have nothing to fear
And birds fly backwards
Where we used to play all day
We're hitting the road that
Leads us back again

Wow - this is such a great song and no one's commented on it!
Well I guess I can be the first :)
This song helped me so much when my longest relationship ended. I had been with my then-boyfriend (now ex) for 3 years and was so sure we were going to get married. But nothing lasts forever and feelings change yada yada, and we broke up.
Although I was really sad and lost for a while, in time (about a month later, after I did my mourning), I felt really positive, relieved and happy to be free. The world was my oyster and I could do anything I wanted, see anyone I wanted, and just be ME.
So when he sings "Sad, blue... the world is upside down, and birds fly backwards.." that was how I felt the moment we broke up and for a good month afterwards. "Packed bags in the hallway where we used to play all day, We're hitting the road that leads us back again," is reflecting back on the relationship, missing it and realising I won't be playing in the hallway anymore, I'm hitting the road again, back to where I was before I met him. And it was melancholy but a time of anticipation, too. Like, what will I do, where will I be in a months time? in 3 months? 6 months? A year? "Sad, blue, the future's not too clear" seems to be about that time.
The he changes tune and says "Clouds tower, I have nothing to fear" because even though it seems overwhelming to be out there, single in the world after thinking you've left it for good for the safety of a relationship, there's nothing to be afraid of, it's all a big adventure :)
As it happens, I am in a totally different country/continent now, and enjoying myself meeting new people, doing new things (recently got certified as an open water diver - whooo!) and just living my life on my terms. This song makes em smile every time I hear it.
