Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.
Now everything
That used to matter to me
Is taken away
Forever gone
The only things
I really have left here
In this life
Are bitter hate and this gun
From this trip I´m taking now
I´m never coming back
It´s time, tonight´s the night
The last one of my life
This time I´ll just let myself go
And leave this world behind
The booze flows in
Like blood to heart that beats no more
And blows the flame of fear outâ?¦
I raise the gun
My finger on the trigger
And put the barrel into my mouth
From this trip I´m taking now
I´m never coming back
It´s time, tonight´s the night
The last one of my life
This time I´ll just let myself go
And leave this world behind
It´s here, tonight´s the night
The last one of my life
With no fear I´ll just let my life go
And take the six-feet-diveâ?¦
That used to matter to me
Is taken away
Forever gone
The only things
I really have left here
In this life
Are bitter hate and this gun
From this trip I´m taking now
I´m never coming back
It´s time, tonight´s the night
The last one of my life
This time I´ll just let myself go
And leave this world behind
The booze flows in
Like blood to heart that beats no more
And blows the flame of fear outâ?¦

This time I´ll just let myself go
And leave this world behind
It´s here, tonight´s the night
The last one of my life
With no fear I´ll just let my life go

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
It's about a suicide. Excellent music. Cool performance. But no lyrical genius.
The lyrics are great, this song is all round awesome.
Do they have any songs that aren't about suicide?
Yes, they do... instrumentals! Hahaha. Nah, really, not all of them are, though the majority are. I like it that way.
