Five wheels, chosen for their skill at breakneck speed.
Three break leaving two that strain to barely breathe.
There’s one left, but he can’t notice.
He’s hoping for an Egg.
Five wheels chosen for their need for untold speed.
Three break leaving two more, straining just to breathe.
There’s one now, he can’t notice.
He’s waiting on his Egg.
Five wheels, stolen for their skill at breakneck speed.
Three break leaving two more straining at the leash.
There’s one now, he can’t notice,
until he’s found his Egg.
And it hangs there spinning
and brightly glowing.
And he can’t stop laughing
and his palms keep sweating.
And he can’t stop dreaming
of cradling his Egg.
Five wheels, chosen for their skill at breakneck speed.
Three break leaving two that strain to barely breathe.
But there’s one now, he can’t notice.
He’s almost got his Egg.
Five wheels, stolen for their need for untold speed.
Three break leaving two more straining just to breathe.
There’s one now but he can’t notice.
He’s cradling his Egg.
And it hangs there spinning
and brightly glowing.
And he can’t stop laughing
and his palms keep sweating.
And it’s spinning faster
and flowing brighter.
And he can’t stop dreaming
of cradling his Egg.
Three break leaving two that strain to barely breathe.
There’s one left, but he can’t notice.
He’s hoping for an Egg.
Five wheels chosen for their need for untold speed.

What is the Egg? Crack the egg and you will find the key to the whole album, more than likely. What is this song? Eppley counts back from five to one throughout the chorus, but why? Who drives a five wheeled car? Where does one find such a beast? This song doesn't seem to have a specifically assigned context. It seems generally to be about one mans obsession with a cherrished long lost posession of some sort. Perhaps a girl? Perhaps a girl. Are these a mans last thoughts as he is dying under unexpected circumstances? Do you have an Egg?
My guess is that the five-wheeled car represents Shiner, because I think there were five members at one point. Epley went through many iterations of the group, losing four members and gaining three in the process, eventually winding up as a four-piece. It looks like his fears got the worst of him when Shiner broke up.

From an email I got from Epley:
"The Egg as an album does have themes, but not just one. as for the song The Egg, the egg kind of represents the same thing that Woody does for a pack of racing greyhounds. its the shining goal that you can just see right in front of you, just right there, but you can't quite grasp it. and while you're on that unending quest, your life's falling apart trying to catch that little fucking rabbit. it kind of
represents my relationship with music and performing and trying to make a life from this career. it'll drive you crazy..."
Procastination, cyclothymia, disorder, exposure fright, insecurity, disease of the dreamer, self deception, euphoria and back again, bipolar depression. An engine too powerful for itself to bear. The previous song to the last song I listened to, The Simple Truth, when I overdosed and failed
