Out on the Weekend Lyrics

Think I'll pack it in and buy a pickup
Take it down to L.A
Find a place to call my own and try to fix up
Start a brand new day

The woman I'm thinking of, she loved me all up
But I'm so down today
She's so fine, she's in my mind
I hear her callin'

See the lonely boy, out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay
Can't relate to joy, he tries to speak and
Can't begin to say

She got pictures on the wall, they make me look up
From her big brass bed
Now I'm running down the road trying to stay up
Somewhere in her head

The woman I'm thinking of, she loved me all up
But I'm so down today
She's so fine she's in my mind
I hear her callin'

See the lonely boy, out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay
Can't relate to joy, he tries to speak and
Can't begin to say

She got pictures on the wall, they make me look up, from her big brass bed. Brilliant. Growing up in the Bay Area, I don't know how many times in the 70's my buddies and I said "Fxxx It," get in truck, take it down to LA. Amazing word pictures.

Such a wonderful song; I always hope that someone would be thinking this about me-- "Now I'm running down the road trying to stay up Somewhere in her head." Just seems so natural and sincere.. hm. Again, though, beautiful way to open an album.

To me this song always seemed to be talking about a person who is with someone, and they love and enjoy that someone, but are still lonely and sad inside. It has nothing to do with the relationship, it's just a mental thing with the person.

Anyways, that's how I've always heard it. Cause I can relate. I'm pretty sure the song really means something else but that's my choice.

Bright Eyes did a cover of this, and although my heart belongs to Conor Oberst, my soul is Neil's. He does this song amazingly and it's just so sad and amazing.

Stunning song, and I can most definitely relate.

One of the most poignant songs I think I've ever listened to- by the harmonica solo at the end, it's hard to fight the tears back.

I think this one line sums it all up "..Can't relate to joy..". My favourite 4 words in a song ever.

I believe I read somewhere in a Neil interview that the "Can't relate to joy" part meant the person was so happy or surprised that his feelings weren't even comparable to joy. He said this song sounds like a bummer, but that's not how he interprets it. Very confusing. Just when you think you know a guy...

Great song; the harvest album in general is fire. I haven't listened to it in years but it's what got me into Neil Young (along with Rockin' in the Free World).
