Winterlong Lyrics

I waited for you, Winterlong
You seem to be where I belong.
It's all illusion anyway.

If things should ever turn out wrong
And all the love we have is gone,
It won't be easy on that day.

Waiting to follow
Through the dreamlight of your way
Is not so easy for me now.

Half the time has passed away
Things we thought of yesterday
Come back now, come back now.

Waiting to follow
Through the dreamlight of your way
Is not so easy for me now.

Half the time has passed away
Things we thought of yesterday
Come back now, come back now.

I waited for you Winterlong
You seem to be where I belong.

Cover art for Winterlong lyrics by Neil Young

It's about taking time off from your passions, becoming complacent or stuck in sorrow, then waking up and realizing that your muse, whatever it may be, has gone forward without you.

My roomate just said it's about not being able to find any coke. I guess that works too!

Contrary to poular belief, this song is not about a woman, its about Cocain. Back in the 70's a lot of songwriters used cocaine as a songwriting tool. In fact a lot of them couldnt function without it. Neil's far from that but he did do a lot of coke and so did all of his friends and associates. He's singing about how its not so easy for me now(to quit), and how he misses the days(come back now). Read Neils bio its really good.

Anyone heard the cover that Pixies did? It's on their B-Sides collection, it's pretty good, nice harmony work from Frank and Kim, cool Joey guitar part as well.

I've heard the Pixies cover... I much prefer the original but their cover is great too. I think it's clearly about trying to kick the habit. I love how the lyrics are written as if speaking to a long lost friend or lover.

the lyrics are a genre exercise. it sounds like he was trying to write a sort-of brian wilson type thing. it may be about coke. maybe about a woman. if it's about the drug then "you seem to be where i belong" is one of the most bummer-iffic lyrics young has ever penned. did i forget to say that it doesn't matter because the song is heart-achingly beautiful?

When I saw Neil at Hammermith Apollo a couple of years ago, just before he played "Winterlong" he said "This one's for Danny Whitten" so make of it what you will.Another one of Neil's secret gems.
