They Ran Lyrics
somebody stole my lighter. and where it go'd is higher.
i was another boy, down in another town. armed with casino bars, tight
whores and tinseltown. but i stayed. oooo. oh but i stayed.
she had a cigarette and asked if i had a light. out it came, and i gave it
to her, and off into the night..... his arms were thin, and off into the
night, they ran. oooo they ran. oooo they ran.

His lighter is a metaphor for his heart "...somebody stole my lighter..." He then starts to retrace his thoughts back to where he first lost it. He thinks back to when he was younger...and he doesn't feel much like the same person living a questionable lifestyle. Suddenly, he remembers the moment she had asked him for his lighter...and he gave it to her...and off into the night they ran.
Thus he finally realizes that she stole his heart long ago when they were young and in love...and they've been running ever since.
This is the best MMJ song ever. One of the most romantic songs I can think of.
What does this song mean to me personally: I don't know...What I want this song to mean: the magic of love with all the right timing and decisions made. And forgetting all the troubles in life and running away. Nice to imagine, huh?
theres 2 versions of this song. on Tennesee Fire and Sandworm Commeth. I think some of the lyrics are different and i'd love to find out the true meaning behind this one. beautiful and haunting.
Oh yes, this song is haunting. The lyrics "i was another boy in another town" always makes me imagine being another boy down in another town.
That said i like what She Bell came up with.
