dude, you think everything is about drugs...shut up..
There was an interview with Damon, where, when he was writing the lyrics for this song, he was remembering that his father had a thing for British pornstar "Linsey Dawn McKenzie". So, at least as far as "she turned my dad on," there was a bit of literalism in that one. xD
that legit information right there. however than there the others lyrics that doesn't seem to clicks. It sound like this song it sang in damon perceptive about his dad. sound like he doesn't seem to like this pornstar linsey.

I hate to disagree with every single person on here, but I think "she turned my dad on" is a misheard lyric that Gorillaz sort of grabbed onto and perpetuated. The song seems to be mostly about death to me, thus I've always heard the line as "she turned my DEAD on" (i.e. she made me kill myself? come on.) Now "she turned my dead on" may seem completely incorrect grammatically, but then so does "magic make no sound", so yeah. Add to that the fact that there's no references to father figures anywhere else in the song, or the entire album for that matter, but plenty of references to death and ghosts and zombies and the like. And if you're still not convinced....come on....."she turned my dad on" is just a ridiculous lyric to put in a song, even by Gorillaz standards. Now I could easily be wrong about all this, but I think it at least warrants some consideration. That's my two cents, peace.
@crocodile_smile idk i hear dirt instead of dead or dad idk i was thinking it was about anti depressants/anxiety meds and how they can work like magic but really it just zombifies the addict

"i love that it's in 5/4 time, showing Damon Albarn's musical genius :)"
5/4 is not musical genius. unless, of course, you only listen to pop. ever heard of dave brubeck?
not stealing ideas but since this information is legit, Coming from what i know, one person mention Damon wrote this song bec he remember his dad liking this pornstar. "she turn my dad on" that knock it down the meaning. However though i feel this song is sang in Damon's perspective toward his dad's interests.
"Magic for me Magic make no sound It good for me It good for me underground" Part here, it how he found no pleasure toward strips club . see how the lyric said it, magic for me.....magic make no sound, it good for me...underground in other word i would feel better if this is hidden.or taking off from the world.because this kind of "magic" is bring no pleasure.as magic make no sound.
"Magic on me Really got me down Invade the city It make my heart beat no sound Beat no sound"
Now this is really bring out the massage. Strip club and strippers is all over the town, which got him to feel..well, down and make his heart beat no sound..in other word he's unhappy.
"We pledge it money" // that part yeh the way it sound pledge it money..who it? well it as in strip club and hooker, we promise them money in translation.
"People seem to walk through you Magic's funny Magic get me through All good for me When people seem to always walk through you"
oh man this part was funny to me too haha, this lyric in other word is there strippers and club that tried to bring people's attention out there and he found it funny that how people just walk pass them and ignore them.(walk though you) and yeh it all good for him that people does that.
so that's that.
Oh I almost forgot, "She made me kill myself" That meant him being sick and tried toward stippers and clubs, so sick that he would kill himself

hey man shut up he does have a point. alot of gorillaz songs are talkin bout drugs
Guys, I think you're missing the point. Gorillaz songs are always strictly about the actual Gorillaz characters... or nothing at all. In this case, I THINK 2D's referring to his (supposedly) abusive girlfriend Paula. Either that or he's on a sugar buzz and singing about nothing again. As for drugs, 2D smokes cigs, but that's all. Muds is the only one who uses any big time drugs.
2d is (was?) an avid pill-popper

Also, 2D takes a lot of pain killers, for migraines or not, still drugs.

Very true. 2D has taken pain pills for his headaches since he was little, but he does indeed push it to the DRUG thing.

'she turned my dad on' is one of the greatest lyrics ever written. This song is definately the best on the album
Why does every one think it is about drugs?
you addicts!!!!! 'she turned my dad on' is the best line ever
the song is probably called 5/4 because the guitar part is in a 5 beat meter while the drums are in a 4 beat meter
or because 5/4 is an actual time signature. the drums don't have to start on a downbeat (i.e. kick) at the start of each bar. it gives it a cool rhythm that throws one off at first, but after 2 bars of 5, the drums come back around, when they're playing on quarter notes. for example,

after which it repeats, and the snare again plays on the offbeat (as usual)
