Soak Up The Sun Lyrics
My friend the communist
Holds meetings in his R.V.
I can't afford his gas
So I'm stuck here watching T.V.
I don't have digital
I don't have diddley squat
It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got
I'm gonna soak up the sun
I'm gonna tell everyone to lighten up
I'm gonna tell 'em that
I've got no one to blame for every time I feel lame
I'm looking up
I'm gonna soak up the sun
I'm gonna soak up the sun
I've got a crummy job
It don't pay near enough
To buy the things it'd take
To win me some of your love
Everytime I turn around
I'm looking up, you're looking down
Maybe something's wrong with you
That makes you act the way you do
I'm, I'm gonna soak up the sun
I'm gonna tell everyone to lighten up
I'm gonna tell 'em that
I've got no one to blame for everytime I feel lame
I'm looking up
I'm gonna soak up the sun
While it's still free
I'm gonna soak up the sun
Before it goes out on me
Don't have no master suite
But I'm still the king of me
You have a fancy ride
But baby, I'm the one who has the key
Everytime I turn around
I'm looking up, you're looking down
Maybe something's wrong with you
That makes you act the way you do
Maybe I am crazy too
I'm gonna soak up the sun
I'm gonna tell everyone to lighten up
I'm gonna tell 'em that
I've got no one to blame for everytime I feel lame
I'm looking up
I'm gonna soak up the sun
I'm gonna tell everyone to lighten up
I'm gonna tell 'em that
I've got no one to blame for everytime I feel lame
I'm looking up
I'm gonna soak up the sun
I've got my 45 on so I can rock on

I dont get how some of you guys can say this song is pointless. the song means to be happy with the things you have, the song is something that is free and so take what you can get. shes not complainin bout what she doesn't have, shes sayin that shes going to have fun and live good with the things she has. like when she says "its not having what you want, its wanting what you got". people should make the best of the things they have even if you dont got a whole lot. and when shes says shes going to tell everyone to lighten up, it completely makes sence that people make things so much worse than they have to be. there are some bad situations that you cant make better i understand that. but if ya just do what you can instead of complainin bout what you cant, then that will make alot of people happier.
somewhere in this song, i've heard her say: "I'm gonna soak up the sun, while it's still free."
no shit. pretty soon, someone will figure out how to charge people for sunlight.
nice to see Sheryl Crow happy for a change. i haven't liked any of her work since "Tuesday Night Music Club"!
;) :) :( :* :D :p
Roger Wilco, I believe you are thinking of the album version which also has an additional verse. But I love this song. By the way, for anyone who is wondering, at the very end where she says "I've got my 45 on so I can rock on" she is talking about sunscreen, not a record like most people think.
@ManicGypsy Oh! I'd always had a rather DIFFERENT interpretation, yet again.

See, because this is from an American artist, and used the term 'forty-five', I was thinking of neither a sunscreen SPF nor a record size...ahem

All this time I was thinking it was a big twist ending to such a 'kind and friendly' song...maybe HOW she manages to subsist in a materialistic world and still be so free of that materialism?

Thanks for passing on the author's intent, tho! I guess better a disappointed pessimist than a disappointed optimist. :D

i believe this song has a very optimistic tone to it...like, it doesn't matter what material possessions you have, all that matters is if you enjoy your life. and when things go wrong, sometimes you just have to take time to turn your face to the sun and enjoy the warmth, and not worry about your problems. i think there's also a little story in this song, like how the singer has a guy that she wants to make love her, but he's such a pessimist he focuses on the raw, sad things in life instead of "looking up". and he focuses a lot on material things- "To buy the things it'd take To win me some of your love" go sheryl
She's saying that even though she doesn't have much she's making the most of it and enjoying life for what it is.
This song really pumps me up. Stellar.
The best line is that which says "it's not having what u want, but wanting what u've got". THAT IS GREAT!
The meaning is simple: be happy with what you've got, don't be bitter, and enjoy life. And reznor70, that is a very bazaar misinterpretation. The idea of oil vs. solar power has nothing to do with the lyrics in any way and would not have even been considered when the song was written. Soak up the sun just means to soak up life. It could not be any simpler.
I really think its about this person thats dating a really materialistic loser... and she's like "chillax" enjoy the free things in life... maybee it doesnt seem as great of living the life of the rich and famous... but hey I'm happy with what I have dont know if that's far fetched but its how i see the song
I cant believe how many people that hate this song found time to come here and post it to everyone. It was a little overplayed on the radio when it came out but its still one of my favorites.
