Mall of America Lyrics
They say it's murder on your folk career
To make a rock record with the disappeared
We’ll let the police helicopters pull stereos out of the lake
There is not an image that I must defend
There are no art forms now, just capitalism
So send the National Guard to the Mall of America
And they can dress dead bodies up in tight designer jeans
Diesel, Prada, it looks good, it looks good, yeah it does
I’m going to lie down with a common sound
I’m going to bury my blues so it's never found
I’m going to learn to pay attention to the television sets
And if my sadness needs a catalyst
I’ll just uncover my eyes, so much stimulus
And at the shopping epicenter I have an agoraphobic fit
So buy a fountain soda, put some sugar on my tongue
I’ll wake up and write some songs with no soul, with no soul
To make a rock record with the disappeared
We’ll let the police helicopters pull stereos out of the lake
There is not an image that I must defend
There are no art forms now, just capitalism

everything today is capitalistic. nothing is individual. america is so consumer driven that no one sits back to relax and think, and be their own person. everyone should listen to this song and think about themselves. are you yourself or someone that everyone wants you to be? are you what society wants you to be? are you what you want to be?
you should get the new pedro the lion album. we all hate capitalism.

I think Conor is addressing more than capitalism as an economic system in general, but its effect on the music industry, and creative arts as a whole. He explicitly mentions his own music, and remains satirical.
weird wasn't he in seventeen magazine or some shit?
yea. it was like, "you know youre into indie if you love conor oberst." pretty sick.
what does agoraphobic mean?
yeah control (latest ptl) is VERY much about capitalism and morality... i love it. if you dig this track, you'll dig that album. its like a long story (like all pedro albums)
i don't think that the problem is capitalism in this song, as much as it is greed and materialism. capitalism is only a competitive economy. agoraphobic means fear of public places. ;)
I agree with shinjiikari this is not so much an attack on capitalism in itself, it is more of an attack on what capitalism does to the arts. People used to be artists for the sake of the art. People used to write songs with meaning, now people write songs that sell ("I’ll wake up and write some songs with no soul") and create art that is only meant to make money ("There are no art forms now just capitalism ")
The song make attacks that aren't art related, but I don't that that is the primary focus of the song.
