Greater Omaha Lyrics

Well, traffic is kind of bad
They’re widening Easy Street to fit more SUVs
They’re planting baby trees to grow to shady peaks
A little shelter from the sun and the upper tax bracket
Here on the cul-de-sac we are not giving back
Until the community repents
Because we can’t afford to be generous
There are closing costs and a narrow margin
So go earn your degree and we’ll take you out to lunch
You can work for us but you have eat them all up
One more mouthful and we will be happy then

Out West they are moving dirt
To make a greater Omaha
Another franchise sold
So there are even more restaurants per capita
And they all have got a drive-thru
I mean, who’s got time to dine?
Although the floors are clean and the color scheme
It compliments me every time
So no one starves in this cattle town
The semi's pass making squealing sounds
And it's all-u-can-eat and they will never get enough
They’ll be feeding us, they’ll be feeding on us
One more mouthful and they will be happy then

All those golden fields, lovely empty space
They’re building drug stores now until none remains
I have been driving for 100 blocks
Saw 50 Kum and Go’s, 60 parking lots
One more mouthful and I’m sure they will be happy then
Just one more, just one more

Well, I live in Omaha. I'll say this, the song sounds great, but there's one major problem. Connor has never done anything to change Omaha. In half his songs he describes it as this hypocritical place full of religious zelots and rich white men. But Connor's always wanted to get away. He hates all of us here in Omaha. But where has he gone? I've lived all over the country and it's the same in every city, but he chooses to focus so hard on the people here. Saddle creek rarely puts on shows in town anymore. He just totally bailed on us. I have trouble listening to someone so selfish and self-righteous. SO yeah, the song sounds great, but then there's all the rest of it...

Bah I love Conor for mentioning Kum & Go in this. Because it's dead-on, they are everywhere here in Iowa and in the Omaha area. It's an especially meaningful line for my friends and me because we went to high school with the children of the people who founded/own it, and they're rich bastards. So that part always makes me chuckle.

"all those golden fields lovely empty space..." - that bit is so great! The overall musical effect.

Nothing can stay as it is, everything changes, we would love to keep everything as we remember it but if there is a profit in it, it will change. The Desaparecidos sing about how there home town of Omaha is growing so that the corporate fat-cats can get more bank.

Haha, I live in Nebraska, and the local Kum n Go is notorious for white paint to be thrown against the walls outside. And this song rocks.

Cool song, but the lyrics are a little ham-handed.

By the way...what the hell is a "Kum N Go"?? Sounds like some kind of weird Midwestern sex shop to me :-D
