Hold Me Down Lyrics

So I guess I must have just been dreaming
When I thought I heard myself say no
Anyway it looks like no one heard me so here I go
Cause when you're in the company of strangers
Or just the strangers you call friends
You know before you start just how it's going to end
When the doors swing open and all the drinks are passed around
Anytime the pickins look too easy...hold me down
I can't remember why I like this feeling
When it only seems to let me down
Soon I find I'm searching for the exit from the ground
If I think the room is turning faster
Then I think the music is too loud
By then I've lived another broken story to let me down
When those doors swing open and all the drinks are passed around
When half the party moves into the bathroom...hold me down
Or if you're at the tail end of the evening
And Dr. Feelgood comes around
Anytime the pickins look too easy...hold me down
Down if I want that part
Down if I've gone too far
Well I guess I must have just been reeling
When I felt myself begin to fall
I realize I'm bounding down the hallways and off the walls
If my bed was standing in the corner
I could just fall into it right now
And know that I'd just be staring at the ceiling going round
When those doors swing open and all the drinks are passed around
Anytime the pickins look too easy...hold me down

This song is so fantastic. It's about a gluttony that has no reason anymore, one that brings more pain than it ever alleviated in the first place. Even if you've never experienced that feeling from the standpoint Doug Hopkins did with his alcoholism, it still applies a lot of other places.

What's so intriguing about Gin Blossoms is that a song can be so serious in nature, but the melody itself can still be in some way uplifting. In a really ironic sense, that seems to add to the melancholy for me. Some of their songs are some of the most beautifully sad songs ever written.

I completely agree with this comment...I wore out the first two CDs because they can be listened to while doing anything...but when you really listen to and analyze the lyrics, there is a message in every song...and some are not as happy as others...great comment.

A song which perfectly encapsulates Doug's relationship with addiction.

Additionally, the lines: "I can't remember why I like this feeling/ When it only seems to let me down" are so perfect and could apply to so many parts of life -- just self destructive behaviors in general. Brilliant.

This song happens to be my favorite Gin BLossoms song.. I love the lyrics When Half the party moves into the bathroom.. I think it relates to anyone who showed up at the after party and realized it's the same crowd, but cant leave cause something might happen.. but its always the same coke in the bathroom and after hour drink fests til 5. I think we have alll been there. I have to say Doug was probably the guiding voice in the band. and I try to Dj this shit in my set. and I play/cater to an Indie rock/hip hop crowd. who would dance to Kelly Clarkson if given a solo spot on the dance floor.

To me, this is probably the most beautiful and artistic song ever written about the painful struggle that is addiction to alcohol. I love--and hate, because I can relate to--so many lines in it.

Doug Hopkins was a beautiful talent.

"So I guess I must have just been dreaming When I thought I heard myself say no Anyway it looks like no one heard me so here I go"

and...

"You know before you start just how it's going to end"

and...

"I can't remember why I like this feeling When it only seems to let me down"

...are deeply personal to me.

What an achingly beautiful song.

I agree this is a great song, and Doug Hopkins was one of the best at using upbeat, infectious music to convey a serious thought. I wonder if he really knew how good he was, and if there were anything that could have saved him. His story is tragic, but I believe he'll be well-remembered for a long time. I guess a person can't ask for much more than that.

This song kills me. " I can't remember why I like this feeling When it only seems to let me down"
