Cheatin' Lyrics
New York City where it's cold as hell
And the streetlights shone in my blue room
I was thinking about the nights we spent
Back in Galveston beneath the Georgia moon
It was early and I'd had my share
I was countin' change for a cab ride back to bed
She looked to me through the cold night air
And thoughts of you kicked off inside my head
Well she was tall hair dark as midnight
She had a way just like you do
To make me feel just like a woman should
You can't call it cheatin'
Cause she reminds me of you...
Though I loved you and the trust we shared
Lord don't tell me that I've thrown it all away
A moment's weakness shouldn't change the fact
That I need you and there's nothing more to say
Lord she was tall hair dark as midnight
She had a way just like you do
To make me feel just like a woman should
You can't call it cheatin'
Cause she reminds me of you
And the streetlights shone in my blue room

I don't think that this song is as cut and dry as it may initially seem. At first I thought it was a song about a guy cheating on his girlfriend/wife. The more I heard it and read the lyrics, I kinda think that maybe this is about a guy who used to have a girl that he loved, but they weren't together anymore. So he hooked up with another woman and is saying that despite that, he still loves the one he used to be with. So basically he's saying "Yes I slept with someone else, but that doesn't mean I don't still love you." to his ex.
Hold onto this one; if she loves as much as I do than she's a keeper! That's what the song should be about. Thanks for the look.
It's convenient to say a band is making fun of country music because it is not their main genre. However, in reality, most musicians are inspired by many types of music and, believe it or not, may stray from their primary sound from time to time. In this case I think they wanted to include a song that sounded different from the rest of the album. Since they had another country-sounding song on their follow up album, I am even more convinced this was not merely a jab at the country genre. As a fan of multiple genres, I appreciate it when bands mix up their sound. This is a good quality song and should be viewed as such.
Weird that anyone thinks they are making fun of country music. I don't even like country, but this is decent for a country song. And there's nothing about it that would make it a parody or whatever.
This is one of the songs written and sung by Doug IIRC, the real meaning of the song is that they're just making fun of how ridiculous country music's themes are. It's a song poking fun at the generic country music scene.
I'm pretty sure Jesse sang this one. I agree that it's a send-up of country themes.
