This Night Lyrics
Didn't I say
I wasn't ready for a romance
Didn't we promise
We would only be friends
And so we danced
Though it was only a slow dance
I started breaking my promises
Right there and then
Didn't I swear
There would be no complications
Didn't you want
Someone who's seen it all before
Now that you're here
It's not the same situation
Suddenly I don't remember the rules anymore
This night is mine
It's only you and I
Tomorrow
Is a long time away
This night can last forever
I've been around
Someone like me should know better
Falling in love
Would be the worst thing I could do
Didn't I say
I needed time to forget her
Aren't you running from someone
Who's not over you
How many nights
Have I been lonely without you
I tell myself
How much I really don't care
How many nights
Have I been thinking about you
Wanting to hold you
But knowing you would not be there
This night
You're mine
It's only you and I
I'll tell you
To forget yesterday
This night we are together
This night
Is mine
It's only you and I
Tomorrow
Is such a long time away
This night can last forever
Tomorrow
Is such a long time away
This night can last forever
I wasn't ready for a romance
Didn't we promise
We would only be friends
Though it was only a slow dance

The melody in the chorus ("This night you're mine, it's only you and I ...") is a melody from either Beethoven's 4th or 6th.
what great lines
How many nights Have I been lonely without you I tell myself How much I really don't care

Man, its when you really like this girl, but you are trying to fool yourself out of it but than the next line is how you really do want her, but sadly she isnt there with you. Sadly, I know that feeling a little too well. :-(
I think a guy and a girl have been messing around even though she has a boyfriend, both promising no complications or any love really. But of course, he starts to have feelings for her, and he wants his nights with her to last forever even though she'll be with her boyfriend tomorrow.
they have both been burned in the past, and meet each other, and say they're going to take it slow. but it turns serious a lot faster than expected. who wants to jump into a new relationship right after a bad one? they both realize it's the right thing, though.
Didn't I say I needed time to forget her Aren't you running from someone Who's not over you
It's from Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata for Piano (Sonata No. 8), the second movement. I really love how he incorporated classical into pop.
definitely talking about two people who just got over bad relationships and said they'd just "be friends," then realized they weren't doing such a good job of that. they just can't deny that they have feelings for each other. "tomorrow is such a long time away, this night can last forever." he's saying he knows it's wrong, but just for tonight they are going to forget the rules.
Um, The melody isn't from Beethoven's "4th or 6th" (Seriously dude???). It is from the second movement of Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13, aka Sonata Pathétique.
While Billy Joel credits Beethoven in the liner notes, he never acquired permission or rights from Beethoven's estate. Beethoven's ancestor, Malcolm Beethoven is quoted in the January 1983 Spin magazine on the subject: "I've heard the track, and yes you can see that the melody is derivative of that piano number, but really they are two different songs, so the estate decided not to take legal action". Since the song was never released as a single, there was no way to quantify what damages would be due to the Beethoven's regardless.
