For Your Life Lyrics
Exhibition is your habit, Emotion second hand.
Had to pull away to save me, Maybe next time around
And she said, 'don't you want it?
Don't you want cocaine-cocaine-cocaine
Hadn't planned to, could not stand to try it, fry it, na na na yeah.
Oh oh babe, damned. Down in the pits you go no lower
The next stop's underground. Oh, hello underground.
Wine and roses ain't quite over, fate deals a losing hand
And I said: didn't mean to... did not mean to fail
You didn't plan it, you over-ran it
You wanna do it when you wanna
You wanna do it, do it when you wanna
Oh baby, if you fake it, mama, Baby, fake with all your might
When you fake it, mama, Please fake it right (for yourself babe)
You're fakin' it for your life, for your life, for your life, for your life
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, Do it when you wanna
Do it, do it, do it, Do it when you wanna
Sometime, baby, nothin' I could do
On the balance of a crystal, Payin' through the nose
And when they couldn't resist you, I thought you'd go with the flow.
Fold up your show
Hadn't planned to, Could not stand to fry in it
Hadn't planned it, I over-ran it, (fryin)
For your life, For your life.
Musically this is my very very very favorite Led Zep song. I just love the catchy hooks in it. The first time I heard this song I was just floored.
I do believe it is dealing with drug addiction but this song could be explaining how to program your DVR and it would still rock!!!
Sounds like he says "coquette, coquette, coquette" which means "flirtatious woman".

Lyrics from Off the the record - published by Time Warner Order Ref: 2912A
In the book "Tight but loose" Plant in his depressive state in Malibu gave rise to the venomous theme of 'For your life'. "That was a bitter teaty with rock'n'roll." He commented later. "The girls who in 'Sick Again' had been wonderful were now suddenly... well they were hung on the balance of a crystal paying through the nose."
Hang on to that book, "Presence - Off The Record." It appears to be out of print.

I think these may be the most accurate lyrics to this song yet.

god this song is awesome
Wow this is a great song and only 4 other people have commented on it. First off I love this song. Second, w00t
This song is most likely about doing cocaine. Maybe about peer pressure to do it.
i love this song! it seems like its about groupies offering drugs to led zeppelin or somethin..i dont know..
well...two words to describe this song...PEER PRESSURE...its pretty obvious..anyway..this song is really cool! Every should listen to it!! ha...I really like this beat in it... its cool..
The cocaine reference was not lost on me, and the images of an early death are apparant as well ("Wine and Roses ain't quitre over, Fate deals a losing hand"). More than enough to (A) make me not do drugs, and (B) Learn to play guitar.
you can almost tell when they were recording this album, it was right in the middle of the peak of the cantertbury scene. whenever i listen to this album, i can't help but think canterbury scene.
