Catch The Sun Lyrics
Every day it comes to this
Catch the things you might have missed
You say, get back to yesterday
I ain't ever going back
Back to the place that I can't stand
But I, I miss the way you lie
Cause I've always been misunderstood
Pulled apart and ripped in two
But I, I miss the way you lie
Catch the sun, before it's gone
Here it comes, up in smoke and gone
Catch the sun, it never comes
Cry in the sand, lost in the fire
I never really understood
Why I did not feel so good
But I, I miss the way you lie
Cause I've always been up and down
Never wanted to hit the ground
But I, I miss the way you lie
Catch the sun, before it's gone
Here it comes, up in smoke and gone
Catch the sun, it never comes
Cry in the sand, lost in the fire
Catch the things you might have missed
You say, get back to yesterday
I ain't ever going back
Back to the place that I can't stand
But I, I miss the way you lie
Cause I've always been misunderstood
Pulled apart and ripped in two
But I, I miss the way you lie
Here it comes, up in smoke and gone
Catch the sun, it never comes
Cry in the sand, lost in the fire
Why I did not feel so good
But I, I miss the way you lie
Cause I've always been up and down
Never wanted to hit the ground
But I, I miss the way you lie
Here it comes, up in smoke and gone
Catch the sun, it never comes
Cry in the sand, lost in the fire

Reminds me of summer, quite possibly one of the best summers ever, actually...
The song is obviously about the breaking of a relationship and of missed opportunities. But also subtly coming to terms with the demoralizing realisation that all their hard work had literally gone up in smoke when a fire burned down their studio and destroyed everything that was Sub Sub. They needn't have been so disheartened by the loss though. In fact the fire was certainly the defining moment in their progression. Their music as doves is in a whole different league. The fire remains a theme throughout their music particularly in their early work.
One of my favourite Doves tracks.
I think the last line in the chorus is, "Lost every fight I had." The previous line is, "Cry in the sand," which is where some people put their heads, figuratively speaking, when cowed by life's rough times. This also loosely goes with the contender motif of the album art. Many of the songs on the record are about being at odds with someone else in some way.
To me, this song is about believing in someone, and finding out they not only aren't what you thought, but have worked you over for their own ends; yet, you just can't shake how you feel for them. "I miss the way you lie..." Good God, that could have been me saying that to any of several exes at certain times! But, "I ain't ever going back..."
this is probably my favorite song by the doves. it always makes me smile. for some reason, whenever i hear it, it makes me feel like i'm just running or dancing in a field or grass or flowers or something.
I tend to ignore the deeper lyrical meaning when I hear this song come on, especially if it's a sunny day after a long bout of rain or the first day of spring where a bit of warmth is finally slipping into the air. Such an upbeat tempo and great arrangement, I can't help but smile.
Came to this song rather late in life. You know how sometimes you can hear a song without really listening. Well this is one of those for me. Also good interpretation by some previous posts.
This takes me back to the summer of 2000 when I saw these guys support Oasis at Wembley Stadium. Such a great and happy song on a tremendous but sad album. Live for the moment. Enjoy the good times they won’t always be here so catch the sun before it’s gone
Beautiful!
This is such a wikid song.
only 3 songs, this is the doves best song. comment away on its sheer brilliance
